I’m excited to share that I’m officially joining the Rotary Club of Sarasota Sunrise! ☀️

I’m proud to call Sarasota home, and becoming more involved in the community I serve means so much to me. I’m looking forward to the friendships, service, and opportunities to give back that come with being part of the Rotary family.

Thank you, Rotary Club of Sarasota Sunrise, for such a warm welcome! 💙

— Cory Fountain
COFO Insurance Group

This Friday is a special day for our club as we officially welcome Cory Fountain into the Rotary Club of Sarasota Sunrise family. We are truly grateful that Cory has chosen to become part of our Rotary family and share in our commitment to friendship, service, and making a difference in the lives of others. Please join us in giving Cory a warm Sunrise welcome as we celebrate the beginning of his Rotary journey!

Cory Fountain was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA where he met his wife, Shelly, who was also his high school sweetheart. Cory and Shelly have three children together and recently moved to Sarasota in June 2024 just in time to experience their first hurricanes.

Cory‘s hobbies include baseball, basketball, playing some neighborhood poker, dinner dates and remaining undefeated at Marco Polo, although his kids may disagree.

After a 25+ year career as a medical device industry rep, Cory now focuses 100% of his business attention on his agency, COFO Insurance Group. For the past 12 years, Cory has supported and assisted his clients with their Medicare insurance needs, from reducing the stress of the initial enrollment to navigating the complexities of plan selection, the Open Enrollment season, and beyond.

At the farmers market, going with your gut usually works. 🍅

When choosing Medicare coverage? Maybe bring a list.

The lowest premium—or the prettiest brochure—doesn’t necessarily mean a plan is the best fit for you. Before enrolling or changing coverage, look beyond the headline benefits and check:

✓ Are your doctors and specialists in the network?
✓ Are your prescriptions covered, and on which cost tiers?
✓ Is your preferred pharmacy considered “preferred” by the plan?
✓ What might you pay for specialists, hospital stays and outpatient procedures?
✓ What is the plan’s yearly out-of-pocket maximum?
✓ Will the coverage work when you travel or spend time in another state?
✓ Are dental, vision, hearing or other extra benefits actually useful to you?

Tomatoes can be an impulse purchase. Medicare coverage probably shouldn’t be. 😄

If your doctors, prescriptions or healthcare needs have changed, gathering this information now can make your next coverage review much easier.

Turning 65? Retiring? Wondering whether your current coverage still fits?

I can help with the Medicare rules. Pickleball scoring is still between you and your neighbors.

Spending the night in a hospital doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve been admitted as an inpatient.

You may be receiving observation services, which Medicare considers outpatient care—even if you remain in the hospital overnight.

Why does that matter? Under Original Medicare, skilled-nursing facility coverage usually requires a medically necessary inpatient hospital stay of at least three consecutive days. Time spent in the emergency room or under observation doesn’t count toward those three days.

Before leaving the hospital, ask:

“What is my official hospital status?”

Medicare Advantage plans and certain approved programs may have different skilled-nursing requirements, so check your plan.

Planning an international trip or cruise? Check your medical coverage before you leave.

Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover healthcare outside the United States, except in limited circumstances. Medicare drug plans also don’t cover prescriptions purchased abroad.

Before traveling, confirm:

✓ Your Medicare Advantage plan’s emergency and urgent-care rules
✓ Whether your Medigap policy includes foreign-travel emergency coverage
✓ Any limits or exclusions in a travel medical policy
✓ That you have an adequate supply of your medications

Travel insurance doesn’t always include medical coverage, so read the policy details carefully.

Does Medicare cover an annual eye exam and new glasses? The answer depends on why you need the care.

Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover routine eye exams for an eyeglass or contact-lens prescription. However, Medicare Part B may cover certain eye services, including:

✓ Yearly diabetic-retinopathy exams for people with diabetes
✓ Glaucoma screenings every 12 months for people at high risk
✓ Certain tests and treatments for macular degeneration
✓ One pair of standard eyeglasses—or contact lenses—after each covered cataract surgery that implants an intraocular lens

Some Medicare Advantage plans offer additional routine vision benefits, so review your specific plan before scheduling care.

Your Medicare number is valuable personal information—protect it just as carefully as a credit card number.

Before sharing it, pause and ask:

✓ Do I know who is requesting it?
✓ Did I initiate this call?
✓ Is someone offering gifts or “free” medical equipment?

Only provide your Medicare number to trusted doctors, healthcare providers, plans, or people you know should have it. If you believe someone is improperly using your number, contact 1-800-MEDICARE.

Your Medicare plan’s Annual Notice of Change will arrive in September. Don’t mistake it for ordinary mail—it explains changes taking effect January 1, 2027.

Check it for updates to:

✓ Costs
✓ Coverage and benefits
✓ Covered medications
✓ Provider and pharmacy networks

If an important medication, doctor, benefit, or cost is changing, make a note so you’re prepared for Medicare Open Enrollment.

Medicare vaccine coverage is divided between Part B and Part D—and knowing which part pays can make scheduling easier.

Part B covers certain vaccines, including:

✓ Flu
✓ COVID-19
✓ Pneumococcal
✓ Hepatitis B when Medicare’s coverage requirements are met

Part D generally covers adult vaccines recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices that Part B doesn’t cover, including shingles, RSV and Tdap.

You generally pay nothing for these covered vaccines when the applicable Medicare requirements are met. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, check with your plan before choosing a pharmacy or provider.

Hurricane preparation isn’t only about shutters and supplies—your Medicare information deserves a place in your emergency plan, too.

Before severe weather arrives:

✓ Save your Medicare plan’s phone number
✓ Keep your insurance cards and medication list protected
✓ Ask your plan how to replace lost or damaged prescriptions
✓ Save receipts if you must pay for medication at an out-of-network pharmacy

If a government-declared emergency or disaster prevents you from using another qualifying enrollment period, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period to enroll in or change Medicare coverage.
