On Monday, we talked about the Initial Coverage Phase in Part D plans. Today, we'll discuss the second phase: The Initial Coverage Phase.

Once you meet your deductible, you'll enter the initial coverage phase. At this point, your plan will begin paying for a portion of your medication costs. Generally speaking, you'll owe around 25% for your prescriptions. As we mentioned on Monday, you may owe more or less than that depending on which tier your particular medications fall into.

You will remain in the initial coverage phase until you've spent a total of $2,000 on covered medications, which does include the deductible.

Medicare prescription drug plans are going to work a bit differently in 2025. Since the coverage gap (also known as the donut hole) is officially GONE, prescription plans will now only have 3 phases of coverage instead of 4. We'll take you through each phase this week.

Today, we're starting with the first phase of coverage: The Deductible Phase.

Everyone starts here. During this phase, you'll be working to meet your deductible. The standard Part D deductible in 2025 is $590. Your plan could have a lower deductible, but no plan will be higher than $590.

The deductible may not apply to all your prescriptions. Drug formularies are arranged in tiers. Drugs in the lower tiers (common, generic medications) often don't require a deductible. Drugs in higher tiers (specialized, name-brand medications) usually do.

If any of your prescriptions fall into higher tiers, you'll need to meet your deductible before the plan begins to pay for a portion of your medications.
