A little bit of history...

Ten San Luis Obispo residents gathered in 1942 to discuss forming a credit union. They wanted to provide a way for people of ordinary means to borrow at reasonable interest rates under thoroughly honest and fair conditions. On January 8, 1943, thirty-two San Luis Obispo County school employees were present when Superintendent Charles E. Teach called the first official meeting to order. They held the first election and began operations with assets of just $500. Six years later the acronym SESLOC was adopted, which stands for: School Employees of San Luis Obispo County. While originally for those in education, SESLOC now offers services to everyone who lives, works, or attends school in central and costal California. That includes San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Tulare, Kings, Fresno, Kern, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, as well as their families. Today, with 59,000+members and 80+ years of service to the community, SESLOC retains its commitment to providing valued financial services and education with honesty and integrity. What are credit unions? Credit unions are cooperative financial institutions designed to give back to their members, not stockholders. The members are the owners! Credit unions are not driven by profit. Credit unions have a volunteer Board of Directors, and profits are returned to members in the form of lower loan rates, higher savings rates, and lower cost services. The credit union philosophy that people are more important than profits benefits both the credit union members and their community.

Check fraud is on the rise, and it can affect anyone. The top five forms of check fraud are:

1. Mail theft: Checks are stolen out of your mailbox and deposited by someone else.
2. Check washing: The payee and/or amount to be paid are altered.
3. Counterfeit checks: A fraudulent check copy created to steal money from someone's account.
4. Fake check scams: Often associated with a job offer or prize, the scammer sends a fake check and asks for part of it back.
5. Forged checks: A scammer writing a bad check from someone else's account.

Be sure to check your bank statements regularly to ensure your accounts are safe and there are no attempts to steal from your accounts. And if you either receive a mystery check or get a strange request to refund part of a check, it could be a scam. Always talk to your bank before making any money moves you are unsure about.

These life skills will follow them into adulthood, setting up the foundation for financial success.
