Startup U the new reality show on ABC was entertaining. The lives of several young, wide eyed wanna-be entrepreneurs showcased how anyone with an idea can make it under the leadership of Tim Draper. The show was dressed in a typical "reality show" platform. People do missions to learn startup skills, get critiqued, and listen to what Tim says. Blah.. The producers oversee this "standard" platform since creating a business is different. It doesn't follow the mold of typical reality shows.. but that's another story. The model is basic but doesn't truly get at the meat of how startup's grow and take shape.

These poor souls who want be the next CEO or cover on some magazine have the wrong goal to begin with. If you heard most of them it had something to do with making a lot of money. Which is not bad. But to let it be your prime motivation for launching a new venture it could be detrimental. As we've posted on numerous occasions. Having money as the driving force of your startup will guarantee a fail. Why? Because it doesn't take money to overcome the challenges, heart ache, and extreme difficulty in reaching goals.

Those that think about the money will not succeed since they will be less inclined to go the extra mile. Phenetics Inc., has had many people stay with the company for a short period since, at the end of the day, were not getting the amount of money they wanted. If you truly want to be a stat. on startup failures, have a team focused on the dollar. People who are truly in in to see the company sail into success will succeed. That simple.

If money was the true element we would be able to solve 99% of the problems in the world by just throwing more dollars at it. Take the government. More money is spent on war, fixing screw ups, and other issues. What does result is more disaster and instability. More money is spent on fighting the drug war. We then see more drugs on the streets, record amounts of gov't agencies in rehab and recovery. It's a total mess. But don't worry more legislation will be passed and more funds raised to fix it.

The issue this reality show fails to harness is the absolute core ingredient every innovator should have. That's direction. Most people went through some selection process to get on the show. The key thing here is finding out the background of the person. We don't know any of these people. What drives them? Where'd they come from and what do they do? Who are these kids? We need to see more fundamentals. What struggle and challenges have they overcome to reach the point of innovating?

Anyone can churn out an idea, anyone can want to start a company. But it's a very small amount of people who can survive the ups and downs of launching a company. That's the reality show platform that this show needs to be built on. It's another Mission based, see who can tear each other apart framework. Without depicting the essence of building a business. Who cares that these kids don't get along? The world still cranks onwards. Show me the viewer how these kids go from idea stage to getting a V.C. investing in them. Nice effort ABC but you lost this viewer.. : /

Startup Entertainment
Reality shows are still impacting the viewing public. For years reality shows have captivated our attention, well not mine... but many of the typical television public. Recently, a reality show is showing how people can startup companies under the leadership of Silicon Valley V.C. Tim Draper. No, really were not kidding.

Startups as we have blogged for years about are gruelling. Phenetics Inc. was started in the field of social media. The challenges we have faced in this arena is like any business. Overtime work, lots of coffee, and of course broke founders. The story we have shared in our journey should give light to this uphill battle. Our team has first hand experience to what it takes to keep something running for a long time. The stat. of 4 out of 5 startups failing within the first few years is true. The fact that Phenetics is still cranking away should provide some glimpse of what it takes to be successful. We have actually paid people!

This new startup Reality show may make for good TV? Who knows.. With a general public fascinated with attack sharks flying (Sharknado) in the air.. anything can be put on a screen and charge people for it. The truth is, innovation is risky, it's scary, it's thrilling, it has it's ups and downs. The commercial media package that is marketed and portrayed to a thrill seeking audience sees a 1 dimensional aspect of this honest truth.

The very essence of how a reality show is manufactured will not depict the core fundamentals of what it will take to launch a successful thriving business. Producers for these shows know this as well. They know that trying to give actual "reality" is like eating organic health food. Sure, it's great for your body and longevity but people are bored with that. They want that sexy, sleek, cheezy mouth watering pizza. Sure, it may be bad for you and has chemicals you could fill a novel with. But it's more fun! You may just get a laugh at the show. And realize how these producers give a glimpse to this beast of starting something new. The show is called the "Startup U" on ABC. Comment and let us know what you think...

Government Sponsored Insanity
Phenetics enjoys providing tech., innovation, and social media insight. We feel that our valued readers should know what's taking place in these areas. We don't mention to much about government related issues for many reasons. One the U.S. gov't overall is plagued with inefficiency. Even when an intelligent person gets in office, they would be greatly limited by the abject foolishness around them.

Take our case in point. The presidents push to enable technological advancement. If you get a chance check out this article from "PRESIDENT OBAMA: THE FAST COMPANY INTERVIEW" Very interesting... Our red flag went up when we saw the headline "...we can get a really big payoff." When starting anything of value the last thing you want to set as your goal is trying to get a "payoff". Unless your just doing it for the money... and in that case nothing ever works out. If you are doing it for the money, then you're probably not focused on actually creating something of value (typical gov't). Like most big government bodies who just crank out silly servicesthat don't value consumers.

Please don't take this as more president bashing. But this is a serious look at the dirty, tiring, and exhaustive game of entrepreneurship. When government goes into this arena, historically it's fraught with errors. Why? Innovators make things people enjoy and want. It's not about passing legislation to make people do something based on votes. Very different. Historically, the U.S. was not built on gov't doing anything in hopes of a big payoff. Surely, they did get a big payoff. But the goal at first was something greater. Something greater than themselves. That's why the Fed's are not the private sector. SO STAY THE F*&^ OUT! Obama, your cool, and would love to hang out. But this infiltration into startups via selecting the best and brightest in Silicon Valley is already a shot in the foot.

When you cherry pick the "best and brightest", as our previous Oil-ridden president stated. You make a direct mistake on choosing people who may not be fully committed to the core goal. One quote that really got under our skin was "You know, the federal government is full of really smart people, with a lot of integrity, who work really hard and do some incredible stuff."
We could write articles on the problems in such a statement all year. First off we don't have to convince you that the government is composed of smart people (some are smart, but happen to have the unfortunate situation of working in a bureaucratic dead-end job). Just take a stroll down your local government in the city. Listen to them in your public sometimes televised board meetings. And you will clearly realize that government is typically full of complete idiots. Second, on the federal level I wouldn't trust the integrity of the Fed's. Google search federal voter confidence, federal level government trust, federal level political corruption. Third, they don't work hard. They may look like they work hard when the camera is on them. But compared to those in the private sector they don't do crap. Most, but not all. There are a minority that actually work. So, our verdict Mr. Prez. is that startup's and innovation is light years out of your league. We create, you tax.

Wild Startup Ride
Innovation is truly amazing. You never know where you will finally end up. When Phenetics was started we envisioned assisting medical firms with a better way to access drug and medicine data. Then we shifted towards helping new and upcoming musicians with fame and fortune (hence photos). That changed. Now, we settled on social media support for small to medium sized co's. FINALLY!

It's all about finding a core objective and focusing on it. Laser focus. The time it took to iron-out a well thought out plan.. well attempt to do so anyway took years. It helped that the co-founder and myself were still in college. So we didn't have too much pressure to turn a profit.

When the college days were over that's when we needed to step it up a notch. The journey though is priceless. This is what makes innovation and starting something new so invigorating. You don't know exactly what will happen. This state of unknowing also is very very daunting for most people. Since your paycheck is not assured, nor your living situation, not to mention whether the business your trying to create will even happen.

The good news is that there is light at the end of some tunnel. Looking at where we have come is what keeps the fire burning. If we did the medical route who knows we could have licensed the technology to some large bio-tech firm? If we did the musical route we could have been a really cool company. Partying with the artists, staying up late at the concerts (What we prefer), who knows? But now social media is where we are. Working to assist the lives of marketers, co's, and those wanting to know more about the data in someones social network!

Trust is more important than any aspect in constructing a startup. The T-word. It's a building block of relationships. When it comes to a super hard task of starting a company it's a requisite. Without this nothing will fly. It's such a simple word.. but has incredible meaning behind it. We are very familar with this term used at Phenetics. You need to trust people you work with. Your entering a partnership more than anything.

Trust, is the reason why our ex-CTO of the company quit. At it's core, over the year and 1/2 he spent with Phenetics he couldn't trust that I was in the same boat he was in. When it came to financially supporting us and Phenetics. This is one obstacle that many have to go through. It takes a team to build start-ups. Without that level of trust your just walking in the dark.
After repeatedly telling him "I'M JUST AS BROKE AS YOU ARE!!" He just couldn't buy into the fact that his level of risk was greater than mine. Not to mention my initial financial investment in the company. Trust is key. This relationship relies on everyone being very open with each other also.

The level of trust is bigger than receiving an investor, money, or selling a lot. Hard to say.. even more than money. Money is very important, it pays the bills, we can touch it, hold it. But money can't keep companies together. Trust is somewhat elusive, hard to grasp, and control. Money we feel is more important. But what money can't buy is Trust. With trust you can build a solid team, winning products, and then off-the-chart sales. We, in our nature forget what really matters. Even though we can't see and control everything around us does not discredit it's importance. Trust is what you should go after before the tangible.
