Ended the weekend and welcomed some amazing spring weather with a backyard fire pit/barbecue grill rebuild. Not finished yet but close enough for an inaugural cook out.

One of the few downsides of being a blacksmith that uses a wood/charcoal fired forge is that you occasionally have to take a day to break down fuel to a consumable size. So it’s breakdown day here so we can keep the fires lit!

Apparently our first video post was cropped, so hopefully Quinn posts this properly so it’s not cropped!

Many thanks to .ak with .rooted and the .artisannetwork for his help in filming, editing, and doing all the computery technology stuff for these videos.

Exciting to see the videos coming together and the opportunity share some of these shorts with everyone.

With this year winding down to an end we’ve finally started figuring out the internet with the help of our awesome friend .ak with .rooted and the .artisannetwork

The past few weeks we’ve been in the smithy working on various projects (we’ll be posting photos sometime in 2020/early 2021) and .ak has been running cameras, editing and arranging material, and has been doing a major overhaul of our website!

Huge gunalcheesh, Howaa, and thank you to .ak for all his hard work and assistance as we work toward pulling .aboudara into the digital age (we know he doesn’t transition well).

Please enjoy these little snippets of time in the smithy and keep an eye out for the full video once we complete it.

We hope you have safe and happy holidays as we bang out 2020 and get ready to ring in 2021!

Just because we’ve been quiet doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy.

A little project from this weekend. A hanging brazier? a floating shelf? a candle plate? Plant hanger? Many different possibilities.

I tried a few different things, definitely some refining to do. I like this project because it’s one that’s relatively simple to break down to its base components and try new or different techniques.

Got a prototype housing, testing seemed to work well, I’d post a video but I’m not that cool.

Catches are finished, handles are finished, hangers and accents are all finished... once we get the actual housing assembled we should be ready to construct the door.

Several years ago now our good friends Esteban and Beth gave us this sign “Still Life Don’t Disturb”.

They gave us the sign when we were just trying to get started as a tiny “shed” under our porch.
That little place leaked every time it rained, to the point there would sometimes be a near constant stream of water about three feet in front of the anvil. It was drafty and cold and more often than not it was filled with thick choking smoke.

But it’s where we began, and from there we moved up and moved our shop to Kasaan. And the sign came with us to Kasaan. And we had the pleasure of sharing space and working along side and .ak with .rooted and things were better. The shop was dry and less drafty and had more room.

Then 2020, and COVID-19. Our shop in Kasaan was closed to the public. And so, we did what we had to do and built a new shop with the help of our friend and neighbor Scott Wilburn. And the sign came back.

The new shop is a bit smaller than the Kasaan shop, but it’s sturdy, few drafts, no leaks, and it’s beginning to feel more and more like a smithy dedicates to the Blacksmithing craft.

We’ve spent the last few weeks (really it’s been months)squaring away the new smithy and getting things where we want them and as we were doing this we found the sign sitting in its little corner.

And we remembered our friends Esteban and Beth fondly and how we missed them and wanted them to know.

So in appropriate BBTC fashion... we reused/reclaimed/repurposed the sign to be our new “Open/Closed” sign.

Thank you Esteban and Beth for being such awesome and amazing people and thank you for the sign.

It may seem silly and strange but we’re silly and strange people!

Finished off the last catch and started on the door handles for the door project I’m working on with .ak

Then it’s back to finishing the latching mechanism.

The handles have been a nice break since they’re pretty basic and something I’m familiar and comfortable with.

They’re also good things to try new techniques and styles on to continually refine my skills.

So my sister ( ) and brother-in-law (.ak ) with .rooted gave me a bit of a project.

They wanted hardware to hang a sliding “barn” door for their new home with a turn latch.

This has been an interesting and exciting project and I’ll be sure to post updates as pieces take shape.

Each component has had its different challenges and has required a wide variety of different skills.

Looking forward to the install and seeing the pieces in use!
