Roughly 70% of people who reach age 65 will need some form of long-term care in their lifetime. You may need long-term care after suffering an accident that requires extended medical assistance. You may need long-term care if you have or develop a chronic illness that requires support and services several times a month. Or you may need long-term care simply for physical decline due to aging.

If you prefer to age in place, long-term care insurance may be your best bet.

A caregiver is an unpaid loved one (relative, friend) who assists with activities of daily living (bathing, eating, toileting, etc.) and/or medical tasks. In the U.S. alone, 53 million adults have reported providing some kind of care for a spouse, elderly parent or relative, or a special needs child.

The median age of an adult caregiver is 51 years old — someone who may be considering long-term care insurance for themselves. The average family caregiver spends around $7,200 per year out of pocket on caregiving expenses, leaving 71% of caregivers to report they are struggling financially.

Long-term care insurance isn’t just for the elderly — in some cases, you can apply for it as young as 18 years old. This insurance is for anyone who experiences an illness or incident that requires care for an extended period of time (90 days or more). Having this insurance in place may help you maintain your independence and improve your quality of life. It may also give your family peace of mind knowing you’ll be taken care of by professionals.

Do you know the difference between long-term care and post-acute care? Knowing this distinction will guide your decision to invest in long-term care and can aid you in conversations with family members.

Post-acute care is a healthcare service that provides medical and rehab care to patients who have been discharged from the hospital but still need more care before they can go home. It’s a temporary situation.

Long-term care is for anyone who experience an illness or incident that requires care for an extended period of time (90 days or more). It’s also for anyone needing assistance with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, eating, etc.) because of a health condition.

Are you sure you have long-term care insurance? Many people overestimate how much long-term care insurance they actually have or confuse it with their health insurance or Medicaid. In some cases, Medicaid may cover costs, but coverage varies by state, is limited to certain services and may require consumers to spend down their assets to qualify.

Long-term care insurance provides independence when it comes to where you choose to age (assisted living, retirement community, at home), and protect your assets and income.

Do you understand the difference? Have you had your policy reviewed lately?

It is NOT too late to start looking into this!
