Please bear with us while the family is adjusting to life without Lyle. Jennifer is still responding to emails, texts and some phone calls.
Released by the San Antonio Union-
As many know by now we have lost another Brother. Engineer Lyle Crawford succumbed to a complicated and frustrating Covid 19 infection which he bravely battled for months. What many of us may not know is Lyle the man, the father, and the husband.
Lyle graduated with SAFD Class 07 Bravo, but this accomplishment was not without adversity. Lyle was originally classed-up with 04 Bravo but ran into difficulties with the National Registry. Determined as he was, and dedicated to becoming a San Antonio Firefighter, Lyle signed-up for, and took the entrance exam again and classed-up with 07 Bravo where he successfully completed Drill School and joined our ranks.
Now that is dedication…but this isn’t the end of the story. In fact, it isn’t even the beginning.
Lyle was a four year veteran of the United States Navy where he served on the flight deck of the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) before injuring his knee and performing the very sexy job of delivering mail to fellow sailors (Jennifer really wanted this included). After finishing his commitment with the Navy, Lyle later explained to Jennifer that he only signed-up so he could qualify for five additional points when he sat for the Civil Service exam.
Lyle knew he wanted to be a San Antonio Firefighter and he did everything in his power to insure he succeeded. For Lyle firefighting was a calling and not a profession.
If Lyle was not at work, then he was with family or friends. Jennifer described him as social bordering on political with a deep caring for others. Family was his most valued treasure in this world and Lyle was blessed with an amazing wife and three beautiful children.
Habitually lighthearted, Lyle will be missed amongst our ranks. In Navy parlance be it said “fair winds and following seas” in our vernacular let it be said “rest easy Brother, we have the watch and we’ll take it from here.”
