Good morning everyone! We hope that you are all staying healthy and safe. Just a quick FYI, in case you didn't know...

No medical providers in Minnesota are doing any "elective" procedures right now. What does "elective" mean? It means pretty much anything that isn't life-threatening. So yes, if you have a fractured leg, herniated disc, or torn rotator cuff that needs surgery (this is the case with several of my clients), you can't get surgery right now. Many places aren't even doing injections. Frustrating, indeed!

Why are providers doing this? The two biggest reasons are to stop the spread of COVID-19 and to preserve medical supplies for clinics/hospitals that need it most.

This, however, does not mean that you can't seek medical treatment! If you were recently injured and need to consult with an orthopedic specialist, you still can! Many providers throughout Minnesota are still doing new patient consultations via telephone or Zoom.

At the very least, if you need treatment, specialists can make a recommendation/treatment plan for you to undergo treatment or a procedure, once these restrictions (due to COVID-19) are lifted. In other words, don't wait to see someone! If you or someone you knows needs a good orthopedic specialist during this time, feel free to reach out to me! Depending on the part of the body that is injured, I would be happy to give you a name or two.

Third stop of the day! This afternoon I'm at Minnesota Spine Institute in Roseville, MN. This is the private practice of Dr. Dan Hanson.

First off, spine care has come A LONG WAY in the last decade, but especially more recently. As a QRC, I always aim for getting the injured workers back to work as soon as possible (safely). We try and have the providers exhaust all conservative options before considering surgery.

Quick PSA, if you go see a spine surgeon before trying any conservative treatment (i.e. such as physical therapy, a medication regiment, injections, etc.) and the surgeon recommends surgery right away, FIND A NEW SURGEON! Of course there are exceptions, such as in emergency situations, but a lot of spines can be treated with conservative care. Always try conservative care first!

Fortunately, I have come across and have been able to work with this fantastic physician, Dr. Hanson. He is not "quick to cut." He will always make sure all conservative treatment is exhausted. If surgery is required, he does all minimally invasive surgery. Less invasive typically means less blood loss, lower risk of infection, faster healing rate, and thus a faster return to work! He also knows how to work with workers' compensation very well.

Recently I had an injured worker (with a very physically demanding job) get two surgical opinions to repair a disc herniation. The first surgeon recommended a very invasive procedure which would have kept this injured worker out of work for at least 6 months. Dr. Hanson recommended a different (less invasive) procedure to fix the same problem. The injured worker elected to go with Dr. Hanson's recommendation. He underwent surgery and he was back to work 100% IN SIX WEEKS!

I can't say enough great things about Dr. Hanson and his amazing staff at Minnesota Spine Institute. God forbid anyone needs any spine care, but if you do, Minnesota Spine Institute would be one of the first places I would recommend you visit with. Let me know if you have any questions!

My next meeting this morning is at Twin Cities Orthopedics in Stillwater, MN. This is also a place that I frequent with injured workers, whom I am working with. Not only does TCO have a multitude of great providers, but they have a TON of locations throughout the Twin Cities area.

Another great thing about TCO is that most of their providers treat patients at multiple locations. Therefore, patients can schedule their appointments at whatever location their provider treats at closest to them. This makes it very convenient for the patient!

There are several providers on my short list at TCO (depending on areas of practice) whom I love to have my clients treat with. When selecting a provider, not only is it important to make sure they have a great reputation, but that they also understand how to work with workers' compensation cases. This is crucial in my business of trying to get the injured workers back to work in a safe, fast, and effective manner. Good morning from Rochester, MN! Today I would like to highlight Olmsted Medical Center. Now I know what many of you may be thinking. Doesn't the Mayo Clinic pretty much own Rochester? The short answer is, no!

Olmsted Medical Center, along with Mayo Clinic, is a place that I frequent often. When it comes to working with orthopedic doctors and occupational medicine providers, many times, I actually prefer working with Olmsted Medical Center. Blasphemy?! Definitely not.

Olmsted Medical Center is much smaller, more intimate, and more often than not, many of the physicians were actually trained by Mayo Clinic or have worked there in the past. It's an easier place to navigate. It's also an easier place to get an appointment relatively quickly.

So next time you find yourself in the Rochester area and are in need of an orthopedic or occupational medicine provider, consider Olmsted Medical Center. They have several locations throughout the area. Today I am at the main hospital. Let me know if you have any questions!
