I found an interesting article talking about the difference in what people THINK they know about Medicare and what they ACTUALLY know. I could have told you before I read it that most people have no idea what they have. I spent 10 years in home health and when the topic of insurance came up, people faces glazed over. Medi-cal, Medicaid, Medicare...it's all the same to most people. And yet, there's such a strong resistance for people to allow agents to help them. I suppose it because of all of scams and potential scams out there, because of the few bad agents and the call centers that give us all a bad reputation.

The good news is that for people who want to understand their benefits and maximize what they can utilize with all the different options out there, while also minimizing additional costs and penalties, there is help!

This is an interesting article. It seems that the use of hospice care is increasing and they are now coming up with some figures for how much it's saving by this happening. I have always been an advocate of hospice and, during my time in home health, I provided a lot of education to patients and families about the benefits. I always thought is was kind of sad when patients seem to clearly be a candidate for hospice, but because of the negativity around the word, families would put it off, while putting the patient through traumatizing medical procedures, until the very end, not really allowing the hospice agency to provide the benefits they could have. On the flip side, when people were more realistic about their situations and allowed hospice to come in early, the families and the patients were happy about the benefits, usually less burned out from caring for their loved one, possibly feeling a closer connection to their loved one and often times the end-of-life experience was of better quality.

Providers could potentially have a new benchmark for fee-for-service home care admissions, according to the latest report from Trella Health.
