Covered California will be giving consumers more time to sign up for health care coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic by extending the current special enrollment deadline through July 31, 2020

California Responds to COVID-19 Emergency by Providing Path to Coverage for Millions of Californians

Effective immediately, anyone uninsured and eligible to enroll in health care coverage through Covered California can sign up through the end of June.

Beginning in 2020, California residents must either:

have qualifying health insurance coverage, or

pay a penalty when they file their state tax return, or

obtain an exemption from the requirement to have coverage.

Generally speaking, the penalty will be $695 or more when you file your 2020 state income tax return in 2021. The penalty for a dependent child is half of what it would be for an adult. A typical family of four that goes uninsured for the whole year would face a penalty of at least $2,000.
