This week I had the opportunity to attend the NABIP Southwest Virginia Conference in Lynchburg, Va. alongside fellow insurance professionals, carrier representatives, healthcare leaders, members of the Virginia State Corporation Commission, and state lawmakers, including Senator Mark Peake.

One of the biggest takeaways was a reminder that our job is about much more than enrolling someone in a plan. Healthcare and Medicare continue to change every year, and staying educated helps ensure we’re providing our clients with the most accurate guidance possible.

A little more context on the Medicare Part D headlines…

The recent discussion isn’t about Medicare Part D going away. It’s about a temporary federal program that helped stabilize Part D premiums coming to an end.

Carriers have already submitted their 2027 plans to CMS, but the details haven’t been released yet. Until those plans are finalized, no one knows exactly how premiums, deductibles, or prescription costs may change.

That’s why I encourage all of my clients to schedule a Medicare plan review every fall. Once the 2027 plans are available, we’ll compare your options and make sure you’re in the plan that best fits your needs—not just the one you had last year.

If Facebook has you worried about Medicare… let’s talk first! Below is an example of a headline that is 100% INCORRECT.

I’ve already started seeing posts claiming “Medicare Part D is ending in 2027.” That claim is false and is a great example of how sensational headlines can create confusion.

Medicare changes from time to time, but there’s a big difference between changes and elimination.

If you ever come across a Medicare article, video, or social media post that leaves you scratching your head, send it to me before you assume the worst. I’ll gladly explain what’s actually happening—in plain English, without the scare tactics.

Helping people understand Medicare is just as important as helping them choose the right plan.

Their doctor isn’t actually in-network like they thought.

Their prescriptions are costing more than expected.

They didn’t realize what benefits were (or weren’t) included.

Every year we talk with folks who assumed everything was fine… until they actually started using their coverage.

A quick reminder this time of year to be aware of Medicare marketing calls.

If someone is calling you about Medicare, their job is simple: enroll you in whatever plan you’re not currently on. These calls are coming from large call centers, often out of state, and you will rarely ever speak to the same person twice.

Common phrases they use include:
“Benefits you haven’t claimed”
“Are you not getting your free groceries?”

These callers are not local, they don’t know you, and once the enrollment is done, you will more than likely never hear from them again.
