🔥 Wildfire Near Your Home — What to Do Now
If a wildfire is nearby, your safety comes first.
Be prepared to leave quickly and always follow instructions from local emergency officials. If you're told to evacuate, leave immediately.
🚗 GET READY TO LEAVE
- Put medications, identification, important documents, chargers and essential items together.
-Pack necessities for children, elderly family members and anyone with special needs.
- Gather pet carriers, leashes, food and medications.
- Put your emergency supplies in your vehicle.
- Keep your phone charged.
- Park your vehicle where you can leave quickly and keep the keys with you.
- Know more than one evacuation route if possible.
- Monitor official emergency alerts and evacuation notices.
🏠 IF YOU HAVE TIME TO PREPARE YOUR HOME
Only do these things if conditions are safe and you have NOT been told to evacuate.
- Close all windows and exterior doors.
- Remove leaves, pine needles and other combustible debris from the roof, gutters, deck and around the house.
- Move patio furniture, cushions, umbrellas, doormats, brooms and other combustible items away from the home or inside.
- Move propane tanks and other fuel sources away from structures when it is safe to do so.
- Move firewood and other combustible materials away from the house.
- Connect garden hoses so they are available if needed.
- Keep your driveway and access to the property clear for emergency vehicles.
Reducing combustible materials immediately around the home can help reduce the chance that wind-blown embers ignite the structure.
DOCUMENT YOUR PROPERTY
**If you have a few extra minutes and it is safe ***
- Take a video walking through each room of your home.
- Open closets, cabinets and drawers so belongings are visible.
- Photograph valuable items and lock up anything you leave behind including any fi****ms
- Photograph the exterior of your home, garage, sheds and other structures.
- Photograph vehicles, recreational vehicles, equipment and major improvements.
- Make sure important photos and documents are backed up to the cloud if possible.
You don't need a perfect home inventory right now. A quick video can provide valuable documentation if you later need to remember what you owned.
⚠️ MOST IMPORTANT
Do not stay behind to protect your property.
If authorities tell you to evacuate, GO. Do not wait until you can see flames. Wildfire conditions can change rapidly, and evacuation routes can become unsafe or blocked.
Your home and belongings can be replaced.
You cannot.
