Congratulations to Richmond icon Desirée Roots! We join in the chorus of admirers and well-wishers who support Desiree has she transitions from Virginia Repertory Theatre to ATLAS as their program director. Thanks for all you do for the Richmond community Desiree!

Congratulations to our friend and supporter Desirée Roots on her new role as Program Director at ATLAS! Previously making history as the first African American permanent artistic director for a major Virginia theatre, Desirée continues to leave her mark on the theatrical landscape. ATLAS, a theatre partnership dedicated to preserving Virginia's rich theatrical history, welcomes Desirée as she embarks on this new chapter.

ATLAS’s commitment to impactful storytelling shines through in their inaugural production, "Gabriel," shedding light on the 1800 slave revolt of Gabriel's Rebellion. This production underscores their commitment to sharing narratives that resonate with all audiences. Moreover, The educational initiatives at ATLAS address pressing issues like the opioid crisis, demonstrating a holistic approach to community engagement.

Despite a recent restructuring at Virginia Repertory Theatre (VA Rep) that led to the elimination of her leadership position on July 1st, Desirée's resilience and talent have led her to a new opportunity with a great team at ATLAS. VA Rep’s new structure includes a new managing director and two artistic directors, who are all new to the Richmond market.

Desirée’s contributions to the RVA arts scene have been recognized by many, including our own UFSC Richmond honoring her with an MLK Drum Majors award three years ago. In addition, we honored Virginia Repertory Theatre with the award, when it was under the direction of Phil Whiteway, who was a founder of VA Rep. And, Bruce Miller, also a VA Rep founder, was our MLK program keynote speaker five years ago. To see Desirée, Phil, and Bruce together again at ATLAS makes our chapter of Urban Financial Services Coalition take notice and we are excited to see them continue a long history of inclusive storytelling.

Desirée's journey, from her roots in RVA to her performances with the Richmond Jazz Society and the Richmond Symphony, showcases her dedication to the arts. A graduate of Virginia Union University and a proud product of Richmond Public Schools, Desirée's passion and creativity continue to uplift the RVA arts community. Here's to Desirée Roots and her continued success in the world of theatre!

Although she comes from a working-class family, Simmons worked as an associate professor at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. Between her full-time job and her side hustles, Simmons was able to bring in $150,000 in 2020.

But Simmons had set a goal for herself: retire by the time she was 45-years-old. So, she deployed what’s known as the FIRE Method — “financial independence, retire early” — which is also popularly known as an extreme saving method. Simmons sold her home (to get rid of her mortgage of $2,400/month), cut down on all her expenses (switched to a prepaid cell phone plan, made meals at home), and saved $100,000 in the first year.

Retirement isn’t normally a high priority on young workers’ lists. But this 41-year-old single mother not only secured her bag but did so in the...
