A Fond Farewell to the REA Crab Crack
After 11 wonderful years and 10 events of crab, community, and memories, REA has made the difficult decision to sunset its annual all-you-can-eat REA Crab Crack.
The Crab Crack was created with a simple goal: to bring a signature event to our town—an annual gathering where friends, neighbors, families, and visitors could come together, enjoy a great meal, and celebrate our community.
It became so much more than that.
For years, the Crab Crack was one of the area’s most anticipated events, routinely selling out within hours of tickets going on sale. It brought people together around long tables, mountains of Dungeness crab, and plenty of laughter and conversation.
It also made a difference beyond the event itself. Proceeds from the Crab Crack have supported a variety of community efforts, including trade school scholarships and internship programs.
We are incredibly proud of that legacy.
The decision to sunset the Crab Crack is not because the event lost its popularity. Quite the opposite. It remains one of REA’s most beloved traditions.
The decision is primarily about the people who made it happen.
For many years, the Crab Crack has relied on a dedicated group of longtime volunteers who have given countless hours to planning, organizing, preparing, serving, and cleaning up after the event. As those volunteers enter a new chapter and begin to step back, REA has decided that it is time to bring this tradition to a close rather than ask a new generation to take on the substantial commitment required to continue it.
And perhaps that is not such a bad thing.
When the Crab Crack began, one of its goals was to help create a signature community event. Today, our town has a wonderfully full calendar of activities and gatherings throughout the year. There are more opportunities than ever for people to connect, celebrate, and support one another.
In that sense, the Crab Crack helped accomplish exactly what it set out to do.
So, while we are sad to say goodbye, we also feel tremendous gratitude.
Thank you to every volunteer who made the event possible. Thank you to every sponsor and community partner who supported it. And thank you to everyone who bought a ticket, brought their family and friends, shared a table, cracked a crab and helped make the Crab Crack such a special part of our community.
The Crab Crack may be coming to an end, but the memories—and the good it helped create—will remain.
Thank you for making it such a great run.
