I often find myself discussing the 3 Bucket Strategy with clients when going over finances and I think this may be the reason why.

Many people think about managing their finances in terms of two steps:

1. Keeping some cash on hand for emergencies.
2. If possible, saving and investing for retirement.

Both are important, but the “middle bucket” often gets overlooked because most people are in the mindset of “today’s bills” and “tomorrow’s retirement.”
Here’s one way to think about it:

Bucket 1: Short-term 💵
Emergency fund in a savings or money market account — liquid and ready when you need it.
Bucket 2: Medium-term ⚖️
Funds for bigger goals in the next few years (home projects, education, business opportunities). It can be invested with some flexibility such as CD’s, bonds & stocks, high yield savings accounts.
Bucket 3: Long-term ⏳
Retirement accounts like 401(k)s, IRAs, or pensions — potential tax advantages, but early withdrawals may come with penalties.

Everyone’s situation is unique, and the right balance depends on your individual goals and needs. A financial professional can help you think through how to approach each “bucket” in a way that makes sense for you.
