Home loan demand has increased.

Home loan demand jumped 28.5% in the week ending Jan. 9, rebounding from a holiday slowdown, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Refinance applications led the surge, rising 40% week over week and more than doubling from a year earlier, while purchase applications increased 16%. The pickup came as mortgage rates held steady, with the average 30-year fixed rate at 6.16%.

Refinancing made up just over 60% of all mortgage applications, and adjustable-rate loans accounted for 7%.
