Did you know that In 1964, Ben Slayton became the first Black realtor to be franchised by Century 21, making history in the real estate world. Additionally, he was the first Black person to own a mortgage franchise in the U.S.

While he broke significant barriers, Black realtors existed before him. The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), founded in 1947, was created, in part, to provide opportunities for Black real estate professionals who were excluded from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) due to racial discrimination. Members of NAREB, known as "Realtists," were instrumental in advocating for Black homeownership and fair housing practices.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH HONOR ❤
The Remarkable Story of Vivien Thomas, the Black Man Who Helped Invent Heart Surgery
With only a high school education and no formal medical training, Vivien Thomas developed surgical techniques that revolutionized heart surgery.
Thomas was the first African-American, without a doctorate degree & only a high school diploma, to perform open heart surgery. The patient was a white patient.
With less that a college education, Thomas began his career in medicine in 1930 in the laboratory of Dr. Alfred Blalock at Vanderbilt University, where Blalock trained him as his surgical assistant.
Due to the r@cism of the time, Thomas was ineligible to be a student or faculty member at Vanderbilt in the 1930s. Although he did the job of a laboratory assistant, Thomas was classified and paid as a janitor.
Thomas' intelligence and outstanding ability as a researcher and surgical assistant was so impressive, that Dr. Blalock requested Thomas to follow him to Johns Hopkins University in 1941. Blalock became Chief of Surgery at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore MD, insisting that Thomas be hired for his team. They worked together on treatments for high blood pressure, traumatic shock, and in the 1940's Thomas, himself, led the team which developed a surgical treatment for blue baby syndrome.
Despite the racism barriers, Blalock and Thomas worked as partners in conducting pioneering research in heart surgery This work was essential to furthering the development of open heart surgery, building on the surgical foundations laid by Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the African American surgeon who first performed open heart surgery.

: ✨Dorothy Dandridge (1922–1965) was an American actress, singer, and dancer, best known as the first Black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Carmen Jones (1954). Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she began performing as a child in a musical duo with her sister before transitioning to Hollywood. 💫Despite her talent and beauty, she faced racial barriers in the industry, often limited to stereotypical roles. She continued to break ground with films like Island in the Sun (1957) and Porgy and Bess (1959). 🙏🏾Tragically, Dandridge struggled with financial and personal difficulties and died at 42 from an overdose. Her legacy paved the way for future generations of Black actresses in Hollywood. 💫

In 1849, to escape 33 years of his life as a slave, Henry "Box" Brown shipped himself in a cargo box from Richmond, Virginia, to the abolitionist zone in Philadelphia.

Henry Brown completed the 350-mile journey, barely breathing through the air holes he pierced in his 60-centimetr-wide cargo box, and spent the remaining 50 years of his life as a free person.
