This is one of the biggest insurance misconceptions we hear.

Standard homeowners insurance generally does not cover flood damage.

And you don't have to live next to a river or lake to experience flooding.

Heavy rainfall, overwhelmed drainage systems, rapidly accumulating surface water and rising waterways can affect properties in many different parts of New York.

This month, we didn't spend much time telling you what insurance products we sell.

That was intentional.

Instead, we talked about the things insurance is actually built around:

🏡 The house you live in—and the one you only visit on weekends.
🚗 City traffic, country roads and the deer that definitely didn't check before crossing.
🌊 Basements, heavy rain, lake houses and water that came from the wrong place.
❄️ Preparing a North Country home before the first freeze.
🍽️ What happens when a restaurant's refrigeration goes down overnight.
💻 The employee who clicked that link.
👨‍👩‍👧 The financial value of the work a stay-at-home parent does every day.

Same car.

Very different drive.

Spend your morning navigating Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse or Albany and you might be dealing with:

You bought life insurance.

The policy is issued.

So everything on that application is ancient history now…right?

Not exactly.

Most life insurance policies have what's called a Contestability Period—typically the first two years after the policy takes effect.

During that time, if the insured dies, the insurance company may review the original application more closely before paying the claim.

Why?

To determine whether there were material misrepresentations in the information provided when applying.

Think health history, to***co use or other information that could have affected the insurer's decision.

The takeaway isn't complicated:

Answer life insurance application questions completely and accurately.

Because what you put on the application matters.

The life insurance policy you bought 15 years ago… does it still fit the life you have today?

Think about how much can change in 15 years.

Maybe when you bought the policy:

You were newly married.

Your kids were little—or didn't exist yet.

You hadn't bought your current house.

Your income looked completely different.

Your mortgage was different.

You hadn't started a business.

College seemed very far away.

And retirement seemed even farther.

Now look at your life today.

The policy may still be perfectly appropriate.

Or the life it was designed around may barely resemble the one you're living now.

That's why a life insurance review isn't automatically about buying more insurance.

It's about asking:

👨‍👩‍👧 Has my family changed?
💵 Has my income changed?
🏡 Have my financial responsibilities changed?
🎓 Have the things I'm planning for changed?

And don't forget something even simpler:

Are your beneficiaries still who you intend them to be?
