๐Ÿ›’ Groceries, business supplies, and a family dinnerโ€”all on the same card?

It may seem harmless, but mixing personal and business expenses can make it harder to see how your business is actually doing. ๐Ÿ’ผ

Keeping them separate helps you:
โœ… See what your business truly costs to run.
โœ… Keep clearer, more organized records.
โœ… Spend less time sorting transactions.
โœ… Give your bookkeeper a clearer picture of your finances.

Start with a dedicated business bank account and card, save your receipts, and keep personal purchases separate. If you accidentally mix things up, flag the transaction so your bookkeeper can record it correctly.

Your bank balance only tells part of the story. Clean books help you understand the rest! ๐Ÿ“Š

Already have a little overlap? No judgmentโ€”letโ€™s get your books organized and make managing your business easier. Send me a message! ๐Ÿ’ฌ

๐Ÿ’ฐ Your business is busyโ€”but do your numbers tell the same success story?

Money coming in is exciting, but understanding whatโ€™s going out, what youโ€™re keeping, and whatโ€™s coming due gives you a clearer picture of where your business actually stands.

Keeping your books up to date helps you answer questions like:

โœ”๏ธ Am I making a profit?
โœ”๏ธ Where is my money going?
โœ”๏ธ Are my prices covering my costs?
โœ”๏ธ Can I afford new equipment or extra help?
โœ”๏ธ Do I have enough cash for upcoming bills and slower months?

Knowing your numbers helps you make decisions with confidence. You can spot unnecessary expenses, plan ahead, and see when your business is financially ready for its next investment.

You work hard to build your business. Letโ€™s make sure you understand the finances behind it. ๐Ÿ“Š

๐Ÿ“ฉ Message me to get your books organized and start making informed decisions for your business!

Late-paying clients can create serious cash-flow problems for small service-based businesses. Thatโ€™s why reviewing your accounts receivable should be part of your weekly routine.

Take time each week to:

โœ… Review unpaid and overdue invoices
โœ… Send friendly payment reminders
โœ… Follow up promptly with late-paying clients
โœ… Confirm payment terms and due dates
โœ… Keep accurate records of all communication

The longer an invoice goes unpaid, the harder it may be to collect. Consistent follow-up helps keep payments moving and your cash flow healthy.

Your accounts receivable isnโ€™t just a list of invoicesโ€”itโ€™s money your business has already earned!

Need help keeping track of outstanding invoices and maintaining organized books? A professional bookkeeper can help you stay on top of whatโ€™s owed so you can focus on serving your clients and growing your business.

One thing I see as a bookkeeper is business owners working hard to make moneyโ€ฆ but not always keeping track of all the expenses that may help reduce their taxable business income.

A few commonly overlooked expenses may include:

๐Ÿงพ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ ๐ž โ€” Those trips to meet clients, pick up supplies, visit job sites, or handle other business errands can add up.

Business bank fees and fees charged by payment processors are expenses worth tracking.

Hereโ€™s the important part:

Thatโ€™s one of the reasons bookkeeping is about so much more than entering transactions. Good bookkeeping helps you understand where your money is going, keeps your records organized, and gives your tax professional better information when itโ€™s time to prepare your return.

๐Ÿ“š BOOKKEEPING TIP #1: How Should You Pay Yourself as a Business Owner?

You made money in your businessโ€ฆ ๐ŸŽ‰

Now comes a question I hear from business owners:

๐Ÿ’ฐ โ€œHow do I actually pay myself?โ€

First, donโ€™t assume that transferring money from your business account to your personal account is automatically โ€œpayroll.โ€

How you should pay yourself depends on how your business is structured and taxed.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Sole Proprietor / Single-Member LLC (typically taxed as a sole proprietorship)
Youโ€™ll generally pay yourself through an ownerโ€™s draw.

That means you transfer money from the business to yourself. The draw itself is generally not a business expense and doesnโ€™t reduce your business profit.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Partnership / Multi-Member LLC taxed as a partnership
Owners generally donโ€™t receive regular W-2 wages as partners. Payments can involve distributions and/or guaranteed payments, depending on the situation.

๐Ÿ‘‰ S Corporation
If you work in the business, things are different. Shareholder-employees generally need to receive reasonable compensation through payroll before taking non-wage distributions.

๐Ÿ‘‰ C Corporation
An owner who works as an employee of the corporation can generally receive W-2 wages through payroll. Shareholders may also receive dividends when appropriate.

โš ๏ธ Hereโ€™s the important part:

Paying yourself is NOT the same thing as your business making a profit.

Your books should clearly separate:

๐Ÿ’ต Business income
๐Ÿงพ Business expenses
๐Ÿ‘ค Owner pay/draws/distributions
๐Ÿ“Š Business profit

When those categories get mixed together, it becomes much harder to understand how your business is actually performing.

โœจ BOOKKEEPING TIP: Keep business and personal finances separate, properly record money you take from the business, and work with your bookkeeper and tax professional to determine the correct way to pay yourself based on your tax structure.

Your business numbers should tell you a storyโ€”and understanding that story starts with knowing what each transaction actually represents.

QUICK QUESTION FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERSโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘€

If you hired an employee to do your bookkeepingโ€ฆ

โ€ฆand they constantly put it off, guessed where transactions belonged, forgot to reconcile accounts, and only looked at the numbers when tax time rolled aroundโ€ฆ

Would you keep them? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Probably not.

But when youโ€™re doing your own bookkeeping while also answering customers, completing jobs, sending invoices, managing employees, ordering supplies, and trying to actually RUN your businessโ€ฆ

thatโ€™s exactly what can happen.

Not because you donโ€™t care.

Because youโ€™re trying to do too many jobs at once.

Your business deserves more than bookkeeping squeezed in at 10:00 PM after everything else is finished.

๐Ÿ“Š Your numbers should tell you:
โ€ข What youโ€™re actually making
โ€ข Where your money is going
โ€ข Which expenses are hurting your profit
โ€ข What your business can actually afford
โ€ข Whether youโ€™re growingโ€”or just staying busy

Professional bookkeeping isnโ€™t just about keeping records.

Itโ€™s about giving you clear numbers so you can run your business with confidence.

You handle what you do best.

Let a bookkeeper handle the books. ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ’ฌ If your bookkeeping is always the LAST thing on your to-do list, send me a message. Letโ€™s get it off your plate.

๐Ÿ“š You Started a Business to Run Your Businessโ€ฆ Not to Spend Your Nights Doing Bookkeeping.

As a small business owner, you already wear enough hats.

Youโ€™re serving customers, answering calls, sending invoices, managing employees, scheduling jobs, ordering supplies, marketing your businessโ€ฆ and somewhere in between all of that, youโ€™re supposed to keep your books organized too. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

And that usually means bookkeeping gets pushed to โ€œIโ€™ll do it later.โ€

Then later turns into the end of the monthโ€ฆ
The end of the month turns into tax seasonโ€ฆ
And suddenly youโ€™re staring at months of transactions wondering:

๐Ÿ’ญ Did I categorize this correctly?
๐Ÿ’ญ Why doesnโ€™t my bank balance match?
๐Ÿ’ญ Am I actually making money?
๐Ÿ’ญ Do I have everything ready for taxes?

Thatโ€™s where having a professional bookkeeper can bring so much value to your business.

โœจ Your books stay organized and up to date.
โœจ You have a clearer picture of where your money is going.
โœจ You can better understand how your business is actually performing.
โœจ Tax time becomes much less stressful.
โœจ And most importantly โ€” you get your TIME back.

Bookkeeping shouldnโ€™t be another task keeping you at your computer after everyone else has gone home.

You focus on running and growing your business.
Let a bookkeeper focus on keeping the numbers organized behind it. ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“Š

If youโ€™re a small service-based business owner who is tired of trying to keep up with everything yourself, Iโ€™d love to talk about how bookkeeping support could make running your business a little easier.

๐Ÿ“ฉ Send me a message โ€” even if you just have questions.
