December 1 – A Fresh Start (and Our Family’s “Monkey” Tradition)
In my family, the first day of every month comes with a small but spirited competition: who will be the first to say “monkey”?
No one remembers how it started.
There are almost no rules. You can say it or text it — but it can’t be scheduled or automated. You have to be awake, alert, and genuinely present to “win.”
However -
There’s no prize.
No scoreboard.
Yet somehow, being the first to say “monkey” has become a coveted accomplishment in our house. It sparks laughter, light trash-talking, and a fun sense of connection that kicks off each month.
And honestly? I love it.
Because starting each month with something playful reminds me of this:
Every month gives us a built-in reset button. A chance to begin again — awake, engaged, and intentional.
You don’t need a new year or a big milestone to refocus. Sometimes all it takes is turning the calendar page and choosing how you want to show up.
So, on this December 1, whether you’re shouting “monkey” across the house or quietly sipping your first cup of coffee, I hope you find your own way to welcome a fresh start.
Here’s to clarity, momentum, and one more opportunity to get it right.
Happy December — and may the first “monkey” win.
MONKEY!
