It was a beautiful, sunny day in Northeast Portland on Saturday, June 20th, as Rivermark staff joined the annual festival.

We met current members who shared their experiences and favorite branches and connected with potential new members keen to learn about the credit union difference. And of course, we loaded kids up with swag — the piggy banks were especially popular!

Juneteenth is an important day of celebration throughout the United States; it commemorates a moment of triumph and joy following generations of systemic oppression. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the lasting effects of inequity and the work that remains.

Joining neighbors in Portland’s historically Black Albina neighborhood adds an additional layer of meaning. Being there, surrounded by music and laughter, reminded us of both the continuing ripple effect of redlining and other policies designed to destabilize the Black Portlanders and the incredible resilience of that same community.

Your phone rings and the caller ID says it's from the local courts. Your stomach drops. With your heart racing — what happened? Was someone hurt? Did you forget to pay a parking ticket? — you answer, only to be told that because you failed to appear for jury duty, there's a warrant out for your arrest. They have your name, maybe even some other personal information about you, and the caller ID doesn't lie, right?

They say that it can all go away if you just pay a fine — but you have to do it right here, right now. In a panic, you give your credit card number. Only after you hang up do you find yourself wondering if any of that was true.

This is what scammers are hoping for, anyway.

In the last year, more and more residents of the Portland Metro area have reported receiving calls, texts, and emails purporting to come from local law enforcement or courts, demanding that they pay outstanding fines or fees to avoid jail. The scammers are convincing, using ID-spoofing tools, official-looking emails, and even setting up websites to collect the money.

But they're just that: Scams.

Legal authorities will never require anyone to provide any sensitive information in a phone call and text. Most contact between courts residents will be conducted through the mail or by e-mail, and messages will come from official domains. And if you feel like someone is pressuring you to pay anything, hang up immediately. There is always time to verify the identity of the caller.

If you believe that you have been the victim of fraud or have received a scam phone call, phishing e-mail, or fax, contact your local police department.

As many members may have already heard, Rivermark has made the difficult decision to close our Downtown Portland branch and ATM effective June 30th.

This decision was the result of careful consideration, as well as analysis of data and member benefit. Over time, we have seen in‑branch usage at this location decline significantly, and, after weighing many factors, we determined that closing this branch allows us to continue serving our full membership in the strongest, most responsible way possible.

Members of our Downtown team have been reassigned to other locations and are excited to assist you in their new roles. Your accounts, services, and relationship with us remain unchanged.

We know that convenience is important to our members. Digital banking — which includes mobile deposit, card controls, bill pay, mobile wallet, Zelle, and more — is still available through our app, and our members can take advantage of the CO-OP ATM Network, which provides surcharge-free ATM usage at dozens of locations. You can find our more about that network on our website or at the link in our LinkTree.

If you have questions or would like help transitioning to another branch or using our digital tools, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Our team is happy to assist you in every step of the way.
