Please be aware that there is a "New Medicare card" scam making the rounds.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to work for Medicare, the Social Security Administration, or your stateโs Department of Insurance who says that you need a new Medicare card or that you need turn in your paper card for a plastic card โ hang up the phone. This is a scam!
These callers are attempting to trick you into giving them personal or financial information that they can then exploit. Scammers are known to use things like Social Security Numbers or Medicare ID numbers to try to steal someoneโs identity, open new credit cards or even take out loans in someone elseโs name.
Here are a few things to keep in mind to help protect yourself from this and other forms of Medicare fraud:
1. ๐๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฒ๐, such as the Social Security Administration, Medicare, or your stateโs Department of Insurance, ๐๐ถ๐น๐น ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ to request personal or private information for you to get a new Medicare card.
2. ๐ก๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ด๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ถ๐ป๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ผ ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป'๐ ๐ธ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ต๐ผ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐ป๐๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ by telephone, email, text, or in person, such as door-to-door sales. This includes your Medicare, Social Security, bank account, and credit card numbers.
3. ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ฒ๐๐ปโ๐ ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ผ โ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ณ๐โ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ถ๐ป๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป to request a new card for you, and ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐น๐น ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ต๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ผ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐น ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ณ๐ถ๐๐ unless you provide them your Medicare number.
4. ๐ก๐ฒ๐ถ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ป๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐ ๐๐น๐ฝ๐ต๐ผ๐ป๐๐๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต ๐ฃ๐น๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐ถ๐น๐น ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฎ ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ. If a caller claims you need to pay a fee to get a new or upgraded Medicare or member ID card, itโs a scam.
5. Likewise, Saint Alphonsus Health Plan will only call and request personal information ๐ถ๐ณ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐น๐ฎ๐ป ๐บ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ/๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ and we are simply returning your call.
If you get a suspicious call related to Medicare, hang up the phone and report the call to 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227; TTY: 1-877-486-2048) or visit the Senior Medicare Patrol at smpresource.org.
