Opelika Character Council

Opelika Character Council The City of Opelika became an official “City of Character” on April 3, 2007. Why are we an official "City of Character"?

The Opelika Character Council is a team of concerned citizens with a commitment of promoting monthly character traits throughout our schools and the City of Opelika. The City of Opelika became an official “City of Character” on April 3, 2007, when the Opelika City Council unanimously adopted the following resolution, because City leaders in both the private and public sector decided that Characte

r building was an important part of our community's development. We hope you will agree, and will help us by having discussions with your family about the importance of developing these traits into your lives. Below is the resolution:

Whereas, we as human beings are not to judge each other based on race, color, gender, or national origin, but by the content of our character; and

Whereas, there is a growing need to emphasize the value and worth of each human being in all sectors of our community; and

Whereas, in the American culture and in our community there is a growing diversity of cultures that may lead to pluralism, not integration of cultures, creating a great need for foundational, principled, and common truths to serve as a unifying element in our community; and

Whereas, there is the potential within a culturally diverse community for its citizens to agree upon certain ethics, values, and character traits that would enhance the worth of every person, and improve life in a community; and

Whereas, there are certain character traits such as honesty, integrity, and truthfulness that all would agree as admirable and desirable human qualities, transcending age, position, financial status, culture, education, gender and personality; and

Whereas, there are already efforts in our schools, organizations, and certain businesses within our community that are educating and promoting character development;

Therefore, be it resolved that by this resolution the leaders of family, government, education, business, industry, media, civic and private organizations, and faith-based organizations, are encouraged to educate and promote character development as a vital ingredient to their operation as a successful enterprise, and for the purpose of creating and preserving a community that is known for valuing the worth and contribution of each person to the effective operation of a family, system or organization. Be it further resolved, that by joint action of the Mayor and Opelika City Council, Opelika City Schools Board of Education, and the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, that each of these entities hereby agree to actively pursue the resources and programs that are available to have the City of Opelika be known as a city that values the dignity and worth of each of its citizens.

Character Trait of the month 🧩💚

This June, Opelika focuses on loyalty as our character word of the month. Loyalty is the foundation of trust. It shapes how we serve our community, support one another, and stay committed to what matters most. When we choose loyalty, we strengthen the connections that make Opelika a great place to live and work.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸

True character is often defined by what we are willing to give for the sake of others. On this Memorial Day, we recognize the profound courage, selflessness, and dedication of our fallen heroes. Their legacy is the ultimate example of service, loyalty, and honor.

As you gather with family and friends today, the Opelika Character Council invites our community to take a moment of quiet reflection to express deep gratitude for those who laid down their lives for the freedoms we hold dear.

It is our honor to announce Seth Carter as the Citizen of Excellent Character for the trait of Patience for the month of May. Mayor Eddie Smith and Ward 5 Councilman Todd Rauch recognized Seth for the deep impact he has made on the lives of many people in our community.

Seth lives with cerebral palsy, and even as the effects of his condition have become more difficult over the years, he has continued to show an extraordinary level of patience. He meets each day with courage, humility, and an uplifting spirit that encourages everyone around him. During difficult moments, Seth remains kind, appreciative, and upbeat, facing life with remarkable grace and strength. His faithful, resilient, and steadfast spirit reminds us that while we may not always control the challenges placed before us, we can control how we respond to them.

We also want to recognize his incredible family—his mother Jennifer and his sister Alice Anne—who surround Seth with constant love, care, and support. Seth is a true inspiration to our community, especially to other families and individuals facing disabilities or hardships. He consistently responds to life with patience, perseverance, grace, and faith.

Congratulations, Seth Carter, and thank you for being a beautiful example of character in action!

To the women who first taught us the meaning of character... 🌷

Mothers, grandmothers, and maternal figures show us what unconditional love, patience, and resilience look like every single day. They are the quiet builders of our community, planting the seeds of kindness and integrity that last a lifetime.

This Mother's Day, the Opelika Character Council celebrates the incredible women who shape the hearts and minds of Opelika's next generation. Thank you for your tireless dedication, your gentle corrections, and your guiding light.

Be sure to tag a mother figure who helped shape your character in the comments below to wish them a beautiful Happy Mother's Day! 💖
