To drive safely in snow and ice, slow down significantly, accelerate and brake gently, increase following distance (to 6-10 seconds), steer smoothly, and avoid sudden movements to prevent skids; use headlights, clear all snow/ice from your vehicle, and be extra cautious on bridges and overpasses, as they freeze first. If you skid, steer gently in the direction of the skid and ease off the gas and brakes.
Preparation & Vehicle
Clear your car: Remove all snow and ice from windows, roof, lights, and wheel wells for visibility.
Check tires: Ensure tires are in good condition; winter tires offer better grip.
Headlights & Fog Lights: Use dipped headlights; use fog lights if visibility drops below 100m.
Emergency Kit: Have warm clothes, blankets, and supplies in case you get stuck.
Driving Techniques
Slow Down: Posted speed limits are for dry conditions; reduce speed significantly.
Gentle Inputs: Accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly; avoid sudden jerks.
Increase Following Distance: Leave 6-10 seconds of space to stop safely.
Brake Early: Start braking much sooner and apply light, steady pressure.
Use Higher Gears: Start in second gear if possible or shift up quickly to reduce wheel spin.
No Cruise Control: Never use cruise control on slippery roads.
Watch for Black Ice: Be extra careful on bridges, overpasses, and shady spots.
Handling a Skid
Don't Panic: Stay calm and feel the car's movement.
Steer into the Skid: If the rear slides right, steer right (in the direction of the skid).
Ease Off Gas/Brakes: Take your foot off the accelerator and gently tap the brakes if needed, don't slam them.
ABS Brakes: Apply steady pressure and let the system work; don't pump the pedal.
