Most people have one... The folder. The drawer. The stack on the counter.

The place where the 401(k) statement, insurance paperwork, old benefits packet and something from Social Security all go because you know they’re important…but you’re not entirely sure what you’re supposed to do with them.

Financial planning starts with making sense of what you already have.

What accounts are where? What’s changed? What needs attention? What can finally be thrown away?

Sometimes getting organized is a financial decision in itself.

There are some phone calls you hope you never have to make.

And some you’re really glad you know exactly who to call.

The market drops unexpectedly. You get an offer to retire earlier than planned. A parent passes away. You’re selling a business. Your company changes its benefits. Something happens and suddenly there are financial decisions to make.

That’s one of the less talked-about parts of having a financial advisor.

You don’t have to start from scratch every time life changes. You already have someone who knows you, knows your finances, and understands the decisions you’ve made along the way.

Sometimes the value is simply having that person already in your corner.

There’s a strange point in adulthood when the questions start getting more expensive.

Should I stay at this job?
Can we actually afford to retire?
Should I pay off the house?
How much should we be helping the kids?
What happens if one of us needs care someday?

Most of these aren’t purely financial questions. But money has a way of finding its way into the answer.

That’s a big part of financial planning: creating a place to work through the decisions that don’t fit neatly into a spreadsheet.

Because sometimes the most important question isn’t “What will earn the most?” It’s “What makes the most sense for our life?”

Sometimes the biggest benefit of meeting with a financial advisor isn't hearing something you've never considered.

It's having someone confirm you're already on the right track.

We've had conversations where clients walked away making very few changes because their strategy was already solid. That peace of mind can be just as valuable as finding opportunities to improve.

Good advice isn't always about making changes. Sometimes it's about giving you confidence in the decisions you've already made.

Changed jobs lately?

Your laptop got returned. Your email was shut off. Your desk was cleaned out.

But your 401(k) may still be sitting there.

An old 401(k) doesn't disappear when you leave a job, and you may have several options for what to do with it. The right choice depends on the plan, your other accounts, and your overall financial picture.

Our latest blog breaks down what happens to your 401(k) when you change jobs, including the options you may want to consider.

One of the biggest misconceptions about working with a financial advisor is that you need to reach a certain level of wealth before it makes sense.

In reality, guidance can be most valuable while you're still building.

Major life decisions - changing jobs, preparing for retirement, paying for college, caring for aging parents, or deciding when to claim Social Security - often have long-term financial impacts.

Having an advisor doesn't mean you have all the answers.

It means you have someone helping you think through important financial decisions before they become expensive mistakes.

Whenever you decide to start, it's never too early to begin planning for what's next.
