Beneficial State Bank

Beneficial State Bank Beneficial State Bank is striving toward an ideal of "Benefit to All, Harm to None." FDIC-insured. In December 2010, it acquired ShoreBank Pacific.

Beneficial State Bank is a social enterprise bank founded in 2007 with a triple-bottom-line focus on social justice, environmental resilience, and economic sustainability. Beneficial State is a state-chartered, federally regulated bank whose economic interest is owned by a non-profit foundation of the same name. Beneficial State is mandated to produce meaningful social justice and environmental be

nefits in an economically sustainable manner. The merger greatly expanded the Bank’s reach on the West Coast and enhanced its capacity to serve its mission. ShoreBank Pacific, a pioneer of environmentally sustainable banking, served both Washington and Oregon. The joint forces produced an enlarged footprint covering a bio-regional territory some call the Salmon Nation and united the synergies of social justice and ecological banking. A few years later in October 2013, Beneficial State Bancorp completed a stock purchase transaction of 90% of Albina Community Bank, bringing a Portland-based community bank that has been investing in individuals, families, businesses, and local neighborhoods for over 20 years, into their family. In June of 2016, Beneficial State Bank merged with Pan American Bank. The Beneficial State branch network serves Northern and Southern California, the Portland Metro Area in Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. Beneficial State, a community development financial institution, has been a certified B Corporation since 2013 and has been honored as “Best for the World,” a designation reserved for the top 10% of all B Corps based on environmental, community, and worker impact. Overall, Beneficial State is one of the top 10 B Corps worldwide on the B Corp impact assessment. Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/BeneficialState

Many of us know Pride Month to be overwhelming joy spilling into the streets. And that is real and necessary and good. But Pride was never just a celebration and high holiday. It started as a riot. The story of this movement is one of the most profound examples of people refusing to be erased.

As a bank committed to inclusivity, we draw hope and inspiration from the LGBTQ+ leaders whose courage shaped the progress we see today.

Where your business deposits its money matters. And yet, many mission-driven companies don’t realize how their values are reflected in where they choose to bank.

Our SVP Monique Johnson wrote about this blind spot in Forbes and offered advice for B Corps, social enterprises, and values-oriented businesses on how to identify the right banking partner.

The main takeaway: Your deposits don't sit in a vault. Banks invest that money in a range of sectors, which may include fossil fuels, private prisons, and weapons manufacturing.

But there are other options. We built Beneficial State Bank for businesses and individuals who want their money invested in local communities, small businesses, affordable housing, and environmental conservation. Over 80% of our lending goes directly toward benefiting people and the planet. That’s how we align your money with your values.

A new stove delivery changed someone’s day at Willow Run. For a senior on a fixed income, that’s everything. It’s one of the stories from our 2025 Preservation Grant Program.

Willow Run is a senior community in Snohomish County, Washington, serving residents with very low incomes. Through our 2025 Preservation Grant Program, Housing Authority of Snohomish County replaced ranges that were outdated, hard to repair, and a safety concern. The new models are energy-efficient and have features that support safety for seniors.

Down in San Francisco, ASIAN, Inc. used their funds to fix a century-old elevator serving 27 households. For residents on the 4th floor, that made a huge difference.

In Kent, Washington, Mercy Housing Northwest installed 53 new windows, repaved their parking lot, and cleaned a roof that was buried in moss.

$850,000 in grants. 17 property owners. 1,271 affordable units supported across the West Coast — and the people who call them home.

Updated in 2025, the new standards for B Corp certification require all B Corps to meet the same baseline expectations, rather than each business choosing its own pathway to the previous 80-point threshold.

While this shift makes B Corp certification more challenging for some, it also creates a stronger, more consistent foundation for impact across the movement. The most promising part is that new research shows the potential global benefits if these standards were scaled across all sectors – and the potential is significant.

As the world continues to shift around us, businesses have a responsibility to rethink how we support people and the planet.

For B Corps and mission‑driven companies, instead of fearing change, this is a moment to rise together and showcase what we can accomplish when we raise the bar even further.

From the new B Lab standards to the power of true belonging at work, here are four key takeaways from Champions Retreat 2026 that we’ve carried home with us.

We were honored to receive the Housing Support Corporate Impact Award at Portland Business Journal’s Philanthropy Summit & Impact Awards, recognizing our Preservation Grant Program.

Preserving aging affordable housing is one of the fastest, most cost-effective ways to expand supply. Through the program, we awarded $850,000 across 17 affordable housing developers across California, Oregon, and Washington.

Congratulations to all the awardees doing mission-critical community work. The event was a strong reminder that for-profits and nonprofits must continue working hand-in-hand.

“...that shift from extractive industries to regenerative industries is profoundly critical in this moment in time.” 🌍

This Earth Day, we’re celebrating at Champions Retreat, B Corp U.S. & Canada’s gathering of certified B Corps. Terra Neilson of Beneficial State Bank and Francis Janes of Beneficial State Foundation understand the critical transformation needed within the banking system to ensure our planet remains habitable for future generations.

Their core message: It’s not too late, and each of us has a role.

Banking leaders can drive meaningful change from within the industry. And everyone with a bank account has the power to choose where they bank, and to align that choice with their environmental values. 💚
