I spent some time yesterday with a group of local professionals, and our conversation kept coming back to one thing: the value of a "brain trust."
In 2026, the financial landscape moves fast. Whether we were discussing tax strategies, estate planning, or simple wealth building, the consensus was clear—no one should have to navigate these decisions in a vacuum. Having a "team" of experts who actually talk to each other is what turns a decent plan into a great one.

I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such a sharp group here in our community. These meetings aren't just about networking; they ensure the guidance I provide to the families I work with is grounded, current, and backed by a wide range of expertise.

If you ever find yourself looking for a specific professional recommendation, or if you just want a second set of eyes on a decision you are weighing, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

I am always happy to be a resource, and I am never too busy to grab a coffee and meet someone new.

Life insurance plays a pivotal role in financial planning by offering various benefits. These encompass death proceeds that are generally tax-free, creating a financial safety net for beneficiaries, enabling them to settle debts, fund education. Additionally, certain types of life insurance policies often incorporate tax-deferred cash growth, allowing policyholders to accrue savings over time. Moreover, these policies grant the ability to tax-efficiently access cash during one's lifetime, serving as a potential supplement to income.

Conversations about acquiring life insurance can be emotionally challenging due to its association with mortality. CPA and CLU Eleanor Johnson underscores the significance of recognizing one's unique financial needs and how life insurance can address these planning gaps. Many disagreements among couples regarding life insurance stem from a lack of awareness regarding the numerous advantages it provides. While individuals often take out insurance policies because of their responsibilities to loved ones, Johnson emphasizes that the cost of obtaining suitable coverage can be surprisingly affordable. Most individuals can qualify for life insurance at various levels, making it a financially accessible and adaptable tool for securing the future.

In the context of choosing life insurance, it is entirely acceptable for couples to opt for different policy types, provided they have a clear understanding of their specific coverage needs and how their chosen policies cater to their individual financial objectives. Eleanor Johnson explains that uniformity in policy type is not a prerequisite; what truly matters is a comprehension of how each policy aligns with their financial goals and unique circumstances. This flexibility allows couples to tailor their life insurance to suit their distinct needs while ensuring financial security and support for their loved ones, whether through term or whole life insurance.

Consult your financial professional before taking a withdrawal or loan. If tax-free loans are taken and the policy lapses, a taxable event may occur. Loans and withdrawals from life insurance policies that are classified as modified endowment contracts may be subject to tax at the time that the loan or withdrawal is taken and, if taken prior to age 59½, a 10 percent federal tax penalty may apply. Withdrawals and loans reduce the death benefit and cash surrender value. If you are considering the use of policy loans as retirement income, you should consult your tax professional regarding potential tax consequences that may arise if you do not make necessary payments to keep the policy from lapsing.

Regardless of age, the importance of Long-Term Care insurance (LTC) cannot be emphasized enough. Around 70% of Americans aged 65 are estimated to need LTC, this reality unfortunately effects nearly everyone – either directly or by aversion.

Many of us; however, are uncomfortable paying into a policy that may never provide benefits. This practice of a “use-it-or-lose-it” is difficult to stomach – understandably so – LTC policies can be costly with unpredictable increases to your premium.

An Accelerated Benefit Rider is an “add-on” to a typical permanent policy. Essentially, this would allow a person to access their death benefit before they die if they are diagnosed with a qualifying serious illness – i.e., Alzheimer’s. It is not designed to be a substitute for long-term care insurance, health insurance, or nursing home insurance but could address similar concerns.

For those with existing permanent life insurance, this type of rider may be added to your policy – depending on the carrier and the policy.

Life insurance is needed because you are planning for a certain event – whereas LTC insurance is needed because nearly everyone will be affected.
