How much is your happiness worth? $5? $10? $100? Priceless?
When you reach my age, it’s worth a lot. And, while you may not be able to measure happiness in dollars, chances are you can measure it in happiness.
One way I measure my happiness is through needlepoint. Not through finished projects, but through friends I’ve met along the way. Lasting friends. Good friends. True friends.
For me, nothing beats hanging out with stitching friends sharing anecdotes about the events of the day, or commiserating about missing our now grown children, or mourning the loss of a friend. Stitchers always seem to understand the moment and help lift the pain.
But one of the most important features of needlepoint is that these enduring friends often help you put life in perspective. Sort of like Elon Musk when a snarky reporter at a rocket launch asked “What are you building?” And, after looking at the snarker incredulously, Musk answered… “Ah, a spaceship.” (A simple answer to what could have been a complex issue.)
Wouldn’t our life be easier if we adopted the same attitude? I believe it would.
Examples:
Q: Why did your marriage end in divorce?
A. A lengthy explanation…or the truth…
B. Because we couldn’t stand each other any longer.
Q: Why haven’t you finished that needlepoint piece?
A: A lengthy explanation…or the truth…
B. Because it made me sick to look at it.
Q: Why do you spend so much money on needlepoint projects?
A. A lengthy explanation…or the truth…
B. Because of the happiness it gives me.
If we count our stitching friendships, the price of a canvas is minuscule when you count the happiness you gain.
Yes, it is only one of the choices we make in life, but for me, needlepoint has brought me happiness. A happiness that is priceless.
