Markets go down and most people just wait it out. In a taxable account, there may be something worth doing while you wait.

It's called tax-loss harvesting, and the idea is simple. You sell an investment that's worth less than you paid, which turns a paper loss into a real one on your tax return. That loss can offset gains you took elsewhere during the year. Federally, a limited amount of leftover loss can also offset ordinary income, and anything beyond that carries forward to future years.

T𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱:

1. It only works in taxable accounts. Losses inside an IRA or 401(k) do nothing for your tax return.
2. There's a wash sale rule. Buy the same or a substantially identical investment within 30 days before or after the sale and the loss gets disallowed.
3. Pennsylvania plays by different rules. The state doesn't let losses carry forward or backward, and a loss in one income class can't offset income in another. (Source: PA Department of Revenue)

That last point catches a lot of people. A move that works well on the federal return may do nothing on the Pennsylvania one.

Medicare Open Enrollment is open now and runs through December 7.

If you only have an hour to spend on this, here's where to spend it.

𝟭. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝘂𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘂𝗺. A plan with a lower monthly premium can cost more over the year if one of your medications moved to a higher tier. Compare what you'd pay in total, not what you'd pay in January.
𝟮. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆. Plans have preferred pharmacies, and that list changes. The same prescription can cost different amounts depending on where you fill it.
𝟯. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀. Networks shift every year. If you're in a Medicare Advantage plan, confirm your doctors and your hospital are still in network for next year.
𝟰. 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴. Dental, vision, and fitness benefits look good in a brochure. If you've never used them, they shouldn't be what decides your plan.

The free comparison tool at Medicare.gov lets you enter your prescriptions and see estimated yearly costs side by side. Pennsylvania also has free one-on-one counseling through APPRISE, the state's SHIP program.

"Medicare will cover it if I need care later."

This is the assumption we run into most, and it's the one that does the most damage to a retirement plan.

Here's the distinction that matters. Medicare covers skilled care, meaning medical treatment and rehab after something like a hospital stay. It does not cover custodial care, which is help with daily things like bathing, dressing, eating, and getting around. Custodial care is what most people actually end up needing as they age.

Even the skilled care Medicare does cover is limited. It generally requires a qualifying inpatient hospital stay first, it's capped at 100 days per benefit period, and there's a daily cost share after the first 20 days. Coverage also stops as soon as the care is no longer considered skilled, even if you haven't used all 100 days. (Source: Medicare.gov)

After that, the bill goes to the family, to a long-term care policy, or to Medicaid after savings are spent down.

This is one of the six pillars we walk through with Bucks County families, because an unplanned care event can undo decades of saving.

"I like my plan, so I'll leave it alone."

That's the most common thing we hear about Medicare Open Enrollment, which opens October 15. It's also the reason a lot of people get surprised in January.

Here's what people miss. You may not be changing your plan, but your plan is changing around you. Every year, insurers can adjust what they cover and what it costs. Your premium can go up. A medication you take can move to a higher tier or come off the list entirely. Your pharmacy can drop out of the preferred network. A doctor you've seen for years can leave the plan.

None of that shows up until you use the coverage, and by then the window has closed.

Your plan mails an Annual Notice of Change every fall that spells out what's different. Reading it takes about ten minutes. Comparing plans at Medicare.gov takes a bit longer and is free.

The window runs October 15 through December 7. Changes take effect January 1.

If you're 73 or older with a traditional IRA or 401(k), the clock runs out on December 31.

That's the deadline for this year's required minimum distribution. It isn't optional, and missing it is expensive. The penalty is 25% of whatever you failed to withdraw, which drops to 10% if you correct it within the IRS window. (Source: IRS)

Four things that trip people up:

1. Old accounts. A 401(k) from a job you left years ago still has a required withdrawal. Accounts people forget about are the most common miss we see.
2. The first-year delay. If this is your first required year, you can wait until April 1 of next year. But then you take two withdrawals in the same calendar year, which can push your income higher than you expected.
3. The Medicare connection. Your income this year helps set your Medicare premiums two years out, so a large withdrawal can have an echo.
4. Charitable giving. If you give anyway, sending money straight from your IRA to a charity can count toward the requirement and stay off your tax return.

Custodians need processing time, so don't wait until the last week.

October is home to some truly unforgettable moments in history that remind us how one bold idea can shift the course of everything that follows. Here are three we are celebrating this month:

🏰 October 1, 1971 - Walt Disney World opened its doors in Orlando, Florida, welcoming families to what would become one of the most recognized destinations on earth. Beyond the rides and the magic, it became a global symbol of American imagination and storytelling, continuing to draw millions of visitors every year.

📞 October 9, 1876 - Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson completed the first long-distance, two-way telephone conversation over outdoor wires, connecting Boston to East Cambridge.

🎵 October 23, 2001 - Steve Jobs introduced the iPod with the now iconic slogan "1,000 songs in your pocket." This changed how we listen to music and laid the groundwork for the iPhone and the modern smartphone era we live in today.

These moments continue to inspire us to think bigger, dream bolder, and never underestimate the lasting impact of one great idea.

Which of these October milestones resonates with you the most? Drop a comment and let us know!

Most tax planning happens in April. By then, the year is already closed and your options are mostly gone.

The window that actually matters is right now, because most retirement tax moves have to be done by December 31.

Four things worth reviewing before the year ends:

1. Roth conversions. If this is a lower-income year for you, moving some money from a traditional IRA to a Roth may cost less in tax now than later. Timing and amount both matter here.
2. Required withdrawals. If you're at the age where withdrawals are required, missing the deadline carries a penalty. If you give to charity, a direct transfer from your IRA can sometimes satisfy that requirement and keep the money off your tax return.
3. Gains and losses in taxable accounts. Losses can offset gains, and the reverse matters too if you're planning a large sale.
4. This year's income. Your income now affects your Medicare premiums two years down the road, which catches a lot of people by surprise.

These decisions work together, so pulling one lever usually moves another. That's the part we help Bucks County families sort out.
