Vivian Cam, Financial Advisor

Vivian Cam, Financial Advisor I help people structure cash flows that aim to save more money, generate additional income at a lower tax rates, protect, grow and preserve their cash flows.

There are more than 33 million small businesses in the United States, employing 61.7 million Americans. This accounts for 46.4% of private sector employees (https://advocacy.sba.gov Dec. 2023). Small businesses are considered the backbone of the US economy. Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, I have experienced the highs and lows of running a business. I understand the emotional roller coaste

r that comes with it, and I have tasted both the tears of failure and the joy of success. My goal is to help business owners understand the value of their most valuable asset—their business—by providing business valuations at no cost. A recent survey conducted by M&T Bank revealed that over 98% of business owners don’t know what their business is worth (https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/17/most-business-owners-dont-do-the-math-on-their-most-valuable-asset.html - July 2022). Knowing your business’s value is crucial for making informed decisions, such as when to raise capital, how to approach investors or banks for loans, planning your exit strategy, and deciding when to purchase another business to strengthen your own. An inaccurate business valuation can cost millions, either by selling for too little or overpaying for an acquisition. I also assist business owners in structuring their cash flows at both the business and personal levels. This helps them clearly see their inflows, outflows, and capital flows, enabling them to capture significant free cash flows, generate additional income at lower tax rates, and protect, grow, and preserve their cash flows. Additionally, I help business owners set up retirement plans such as SIMPLE IRA, SEP IRA, 401(k), or 403(b), and determine how much cash flow should be allocated to these plans. I believe in helping people first and foremost, rather than just trying to sell them something. I love to spend mornings with my kids, grow veggies in my backyard. My dream is to build a Japanese Zen garden to be in touch with nature. My favorite poem is "Fire 🔥 and Ice ❄️" by Robert Frost (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44263/fire-and-ice).

Given the uncertainties in the market, economy, and government policies, I understand the emotional roller coasters investors are experiencing right now. That’s why, in recent weeks, I’ve been ending my emails with this simple reminder: STAY CALM.

Last week, I had the privilege of reconnecting with a client during our New Year Kickoff meeting after two years of silence.
I had been calling and emailing her for the past 2 years without any responses. As a fiduciary, it is my responsibility to let my clients know I am here for them. It is up to them to answer my calls or respond to my emails. I can’t afford to ignore my clients, and I don’t take it personally.

Someone asked me a question recently: If I could have dinner with anybody, dead or alive, anywhere on the planet, past or present, who would that be? And very quickly, my answer was, oh, My 16 Year-Old- Self.

Meeting these incredible women entrepreneurs was a truly special occasion. I was deeply inspired by their stories of overcoming obstacles and failures, both in life and in business, and their unwavering determination to succeed. Hearing them share their experiences, willing to be vulnerable and showing immense courage to rise and move forward, was deeply touching. As a woman entrepreneur, it can sometimes feel lonely, but the spirit and support of the Boston Business Women community have truly uplifted me.

Attending MassBay Community College’s Fall 2024 STEM Expo Event was an incredible experience. I was deeply inspired by this diverse group of students, representing various backgrounds and ages, all united by their passion for learning. This event truly showcased that education has no age limit. One of the standout moments was witnessing the group's innovative approach to promoting green energy. They demonstrated how solar blinds can be installed on residential windows, a brilliant solution to reduce electricity costs and contribute to a sustainable future.

Today, I helped a client review her 529 plans. As I looked through the statement, I noticed the account is titled as UTMA. I asked, "Do you intend to turn the entire asset held in this account over to your daughter when she turns 21?" She replied, "Absolutely not," adding that she wants to control her assets and use the funds for her daughter's education. I pointed out that under the Massachusetts UTMA (Uniform Transfers to Minors Act), she must transfer the assets in the 529 plan to her daughter when she turns 21 because her 529 plan is indeed funded with UTMA assets.

While working with clients, I find these common misconceptions that can mislead them on their financial journey:

💰Investing is Only for the Wealthy: Many people believe that you need a lot of money to start investing. In reality, there are many investment options available for all income levels.

💵 You Need a Minimum Asset to Work with Financial Advisors: While many financial advisors require a minimum asset, there are others who don’t and are willing to help you grow.

📈You Can Time the Market: Trying to time the market is risky and often leads to losses. A long-term investment strategy is generally more effective.

🕙 Retirement Planning Can Wait: Many people delay saving for retirement, thinking they have plenty of time. The earlier you start, the more you can benefit from compound interest.

🏦 Debt is Always Bad: While excessive debt can be harmful, not all debt is bad. For example, taking on a mortgage to buy a home can be considered good debt if managed responsibly.

💳 Credit Cards Should Be Avoided: While it's true that credit card debt can be problematic, using credit cards responsibly can help build credit history and earn rewards.

💸 Renting is Throwing Money Away: Renting can be a smart financial decision, depending on your cash flow and circumstances. It offers flexibility and can sometimes be cheaper than owning a home when considering maintenance and other costs.

💼 Insurance is Unnecessary: Some people underestimate the importance of insurance. Having the right insurance can protect you from significant financial losses.

🤔 Do you experience any other misconceptions?

Why do we lose?

Michael Corleone in The Godfather once said, 'The only wealth in this world is children. More than all the money, power on the earth.'

No big house, no luxury car, no fancy shoes, no designed clothes, no brand-name bags, but I still feel like the richest woman in the world.

At the same time, it feels like I'm also the poorest. According to a recent study by SmartAsset, Massachusetts ranks as the most expensive state to raise children. Raising a child costs almost $36,000 per year in Massachusetts. Raising a child up to age 18 costs $439,000 more in Massachusetts than in Mississippi.

I have two children. No wonder where my paychecks go. But thanks to Currence, I am confident in the journey of raising children, building wealth, and achieving financial freedom faster.

Presidential elections can create uncertainty for investors who wonder what the outcome might mean for their portfolios.

Investors who can cut through the noise and invest based on the economy, not the election, may be better positioned for continued success.
