SHOULD I SETTLE COLLECTIONS?
A question we get often is should I settle this collection. *Generally* speaking, I would not call a collection agency to settle unless I could afford to pay at least 75% of the amount. On a $10k collection that's 7,500. I'd open with a 40% offer and go from there.
Be careful; sometimes it's best to let sleeping dogs lie. Collectors spend the day getting cursed out and hung up on; almost no one ever calls in to pay. When you do, it's suspect. They know you want something; and they can legally pull your credit & see you're buying a house. If they know you have to pay it; they may want the full amount.
Is there a time I should settle?
Yes. If you get a "pre-legal" notice or a court summons, 💩 just got real. At this point any settlement less than 25% of your paycheck may be a win.

New FICO scores typically take awhile to be adopted by lenders - if they ever are. The bottom line is the only score that matters is the one your bank or credit union uses when you apply.

The newest version of the FICO credit score will have a broader view of how you manage your debt and will boost as many scores as it will hurt.
