You start a project that you don't finish. You start a diet that you cheat on by day 4. You join a gym and go for 2 weeks. You drink more water for 5 days. You go to bed early until you don't. You stop yelling at your kids. For a day.
As a matter of fact, I polled my community on instagram about things you struggle with and this was HIGHEST on the list.
"I just never follow through with what I say I'm going to do."
To which I say-THAT is just a story you keep telling yourself and then your brain looks (and FINDS) a lot of evidence for how that's true.
But what if you could tell a different story about yourself? (Hint, YOU CAN!)
And what if true change takes TIME. (It does.)
And what if it takes starting over and over and over again? (Research shows that people who truly change, make MANY attempts before the change actually takes place.)
So, what do you do when you feel like you can't trust yourself to do what you said you were gonna do?
Here are some of my best tips.
*Stop beating yourself up about it. I promise that never works.
*Remind yourself what you HAVE DONE, and celebrate the small wins.

We often think we need courage for the big transitions of life: courage to go graduate school, courage to try that new sport, courage to adopt a child, courage to launch a business.
There's the kind of courage that those things require-the kind that's easy to see and admire.
But there's a quiet courage of the everyday.
The courage that's easy to miss.
It's the kind of courage that we often overlook or belittle-the courage to stay when we'd rather leave, the courage to be gracious when we'd rather judge, the courage to be vulnerable when we'd rather build walls, and the courage to lay down our own agendas in order to serve someone else. I struggle to muster up this kind of courage everyday, but when I do, it's LIFE CHANGING-both for me and for those around me.
Sometimes, courage just means making your beautiful, vulnerable self available to the world. That is the kind of courage we need more of and it's within your power to start today. Become an ordinary hero to the people in your path.
Your courage will be contagious and vou will be well on your way to becoming who you were made to be.

Every single breaktnrougn i've nad in my life over the last 10 years has come from making a tough decision, facing a hard reality, taking OWNERSHIP of what I'm creating in my life and taking steps to create something more true, more beautiful, and more in line with how God made me.
Most of the time, that decision involved money.
When you pay, you pay attention.
Ijust hired a business coach and paid her more than I paid for my first real car. Because cars fade away, but what you build in your life when you commit to doing the hard things is something that pays in dividends for years to come.
Nothing changes until you change it, so if you feel like you're living the same groundhog day over and over, ONLY YOU CAN CHANGE THAT.
If you're tired of your victim story or your excuses or your resentments, ONLY YOU CAN CHANGE IT.
And I know you want to because you fill my inbox up with your heart felt messages.
I know 100% I can help you.
But you have to do the work. You have to make the investment.
You have to say enough is enough.
If you're ready, we have a place for you.
Life Mentoring School is a do it scared kinda movement.

I love the topic of productivity, and I love comparing myself to several years ago. I've been able to totally transform my ability to be productive and I'm going to share a few of those secrets, in the hopes that you can shift this in yourself. It will help you get everything done that you want to get done!
I have always been kind of an energetic crazy go getter. I'm an enneagram three. I came into the world raring to go! I've also had periods in my life, I think about when I was in medical school specifically, where I would put things off and then work like crazy to get it done at the last minute!
Now I get more done, in less time, than I ever have. I have more time for rest, and for doing all the things I really want to do, like cook and spend time with my family and work out, but I produce more!
Productivity means we produce things.
Productive doesn't mean that you're busy all the time, because we all like to say we're busy. When I think about productivity I think, "What is that I'm producing?" I don't just work on cooking, I produce a meal at the end that my family can eat.
Do you feel like you're a professional procrastinator? A lot of us feel this way, and we think we're just delaying things, and we'll get them done later. What I want to show you is, what you're delaying is not just a set of tasks.
What you're delaying is the person you're going to become when you do that thing.
Your brain is wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain. The reason you don't want to sit down and write the blog post, or write the book, or learn to cook, is because it's hard.
The things you really want in life are probably kind of hard.

Confessions of a 51 year old physician turned life coach & Appalachian medicine woman:
Ilove to work. It may in fact be one of my favorite things to do. Which is not a bad thing, except sometimes I use work as a way to escape whatever hard part of life is facing me.
Some people spend too much or drink too much or honk tonk too much (DO people still h***y tonk too much???)
could lose myself in endless
work.
I have to really work at not working too much.
And it's easy to justify because I'm not doing crack co***ne or singing karaoke to some old Loretta Lynn song at some h***y tonk? Although the second one sounds pretty fun.
I developed the habit of working hard when I was trying to escape my past.
My life got INFINITELY better when I stopped running from my past and decided to turn around and face the demons.
Here's what I learned.
My past happened to me once but l've been tormenting myself with it all my life in my thoughts. I finally decided to stop making myself a victim to my past.
Now, I spend MOST of my time thinking about and planning
TODAY and my FUTURE and it's so much more
fun.

I went for a sunrise hike Saturday morning to Charlie's Bunion, an 8 mile, difficult, rocky, ridge hike in the Smokies that follows along the Appalachian trail.
The views were stunning.
The atmosphere was otherworldly. A bright full moon was guiding us for part of the way.
There was nobody else on the trail at 4am (imagine that!) and hiking in the dark for the first two hours was surreal and sometimes a little scary. The air is rare there, experienced by a relatively small amount of people every year. It was an adventure I won't soon forget.
You can only experience that if you're willing to be uncomfortable, if you're willing to walk into the unknown. I HIGHLY recommend it.
Deciding to step into your calling as a nurturer is sometimes scary and uncomfortable. We set out with one goal in mind. To love our neighbor as we love ourselves.
It can be difficult and rocky, and even dark sometimes, and 100% totally worth all the pain and sacrifice and effort and investment.
It's a different kind of rare air.
You were made for this!

We are created to create and contribute.
It's in our bones. It's the way God made us. And when we are not using our gifts, when we're floundering and wasting our days away, we cannot escape the gnawing sense that we were made for more. Because it's true. And deep down, we know it.
I would go further to add that when we are not contributing in a way that feels challenging and even sacrificial, it can feel like there's a void in us. Our bodies are screaming out to be useful, to work hard, to put ourselves OUT THERE, to dare make our corner of the world a better place.
But then there's that sneaky part of our brains that wants us to be safe, that wants its pleasure, that doesn't want to feel the discomfort of hard things.
Your life doesn't inspire you because comfort and pleasure isn't inspiring.
The thing we often do when we don't have a goal or challenge in front of us (overeating, overspending, overfacebooking, overwhatevering) probably feels good in the short term, but it doesn't sustain you when life gets rough.
Pleasure is fleeting. It doesn't get you out of bed in the morning with a song in vour heart. It doesn't burn like fire in your bones. It feels good for a while, but then it falls flat because it doesn't require the BEST, most courageous version of you to show up. THE TRUE YOU.
What would happen if you started taking steps to create something with your life more true, more beautiful, and more in line with how God made you?
You would feel SCARED, yes. But also, incredibly ALIVE.
That is actually your true identity---that important thing burning in your heart is what you're made for.

Following your dream is a lot like climbing a mountain. It all sounds good when you're planning it out from your comfortable living room, drinking hot coffee.
You're full of optimism. You can't wait to get started.
But when it's noon and you're tired and hot and you realize you didn't bring enough water, it all starts to lose its luster.
That's why most people quit.
But quitting isn't actually the problem. Neither is failing.
The problem is what you make the quitting mean about you and your mountain top dreams.
May I introduce you to what it means to be human. We quit on ourselves. We fail. We falter. We go back on our word.
That's NOT THE PROBLEM.
The problem is what we THINK and what we DO after the quitting.
When we are COMMITTED to our own mountain, we must commit to believing deep down that it's done--that of course we lost the weight or started the podcast or made our marriage a priority, we don't lose hope when we fail.
We know that failure and quitting is part of the journey.
We learn from our prior attempts and we just simply start
over.
When Stevie and I started hiking together, we made all the rookie mistakes. We had plenty of "failed" hikes. But we just kept hiking. We got better at planning and better at anticipating the obstacles.
We allowed the disappointment to be there when we never made it to the summit. And one of our sons taught us to pack our favorite beverage so that when we did reach the summit, we could celebrate!
