High-Deductible Plan G just got a number update for 2027, and it trips people up every year.

Here's how this plan actually works. You're still on Original Medicare, and your supplement still covers the same things a regular Plan G policy covers. The difference is timing. Instead of your plan picking up costs right away, you're responsible for your Medicare deductibles, copays, and coinsurance first, up to a set dollar amount. Once you hit that number, your plan takes over and pays Plan G benefits for the rest of the year.

For 2027, that number is $3,050. It was $2,950 in 2026, so it's climbing by $100.

Here's where I see people get confused. Hitting $3,050 does NOT mean you were on the hook for every dollar of your care until that point. Medicare still pays its portion of covered services the whole time. What counts toward your $3,050 is your share: the deductibles, copays, and coinsurance Medicare leaves to you.

In exchange for carrying more of that cost upfront, you typically get a noticeably lower monthly premium than regular Plan G. For someone who's healthy and doesn't expect a heavy medical year, that trade can save real money. For someone who knows they'll hit a few specialists or a procedure, it might not pencil out the same way.

There's no universal right answer here. It depends on your health, your budget, and how much unpredictability you're comfortable carrying. If you want to run the numbers for your own situation, that's exactly what I'm here for.
