IMF assessment of world growth underscores political risks as key threat

Commodity-linked currencies like the Australian and New Zealand Dollars may climb higher with equities if commentary from officials at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland strike an optimistic tone. However, the recent outbreak of the coronavirus appears to have sapped market mood and caused the Hang Seng Index to decline almost three percent t which bled into Wall Street and dragged the S&P 500 lower.

IMF World Economic Outlook

The IMF released its World Economic Outlook (WEO) with estimates of a 3.3 percent growth rate for 2020, a slight downgrade from the prior forecasts. The lender of last resort noted that global growth appears to be showing signs of stabilization but warned that geopolitical risks could derail the modest recovery. Some of these risks included US-Iran tensions and the uncertainty relating to global trade policies.

Trump boasts of the "spectacular" US economy in Davos

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) - Donald Trump on Tuesday proclaimed the benefits of the United States to the global business community. Before an economic conference in the Swiss Alps, the president said the country's economic recovery has been "nothing short of spectacular."

The leader intervened at the World Economic Forum in Davos before the start of his historic political trial in the US Senate in Washington.

Trump reminded the audience that when he took part in the forum two years earlier, at the beginning of his presidency, "I told them that we had begun the great American recovery."

DAVOS, Suiza (AP) — Donald Trump proclamó el martes las bondades de Estados Unidos ante la comunidad empresarial global. Ante una conferencia económica en los Alpes suizos, el presidente señaló que la recuperación económica del país ha sido “nada menos que espectacular”.

El dirigente intervino en el Foro Económico Mundial en Davos antes del inicio de su histórico juicio político en el Senado estadounidense en Washington.

Trump recordó a la audiencia que cuando intervino en el foro dos años antes, al inicio de su presidencia, “les dije que habíamos iniciado la gran recuperación estadounidense”.
