You don’t need to copy every ETF you see people buying on social media.
You need to understand what job you want the ETF to do.
Want broad U.S. exposure? Start with a balanced fund.
Want more growth potential? Tilt toward tech.
Want income? Look at dividend ETFs.
Want exposure outside the U.S.? International funds do that.
Want real estate, bonds, gold, or small caps? There are ETFs for those too.
The mistake is thinking more ETFs automatically means more diversification.
A lot of the time, you’re just buying the same companies over and over with different ticker symbols.
Start with a strong core.
Then only add another ETF if you can clearly explain what it changes about your portfolio and why you want that change.
You don’t need to own everything.
You need a portfolio you understand, can invest into consistently, and can sleep well at night owning.
