⚠️ Heads up for anyone in trucking — this is important.

FMCSA launched a brand new registration system called MOTUS on May 14th, replacing SAFER and all the old legacy platforms. The transition has not gone smoothly.

Here’s what’s happening right now:
— Some carriers have active insurance but filings aren’t showing up in MOTUS or SAFER. That means you could be placed out of service even though your coverage is valid.
— SAFER no longer works for DOTs created after May 14. Use motus.dot.gov going forward.
— If you haven’t claimed your DOT in MOTUS yet, do it now. Only the company official on your FMCSA Portal account can do it, and you’ll need to verify your identity with a license photo and selfie.
— Have more than one DOT? You need to claim each one separately.

If your filings aren’t showing up, get on the phone with your insurance company and keep pushing until it’s resolved. Don’t wait on this.

Share this with any owner-operators or carriers in your network who might not know yet. A lot of people are getting caught off guard.

One of the hardest calls in this job isn't delivering bad news.

It's calling someone back after fighting hard for their account... and still not having the answer they wanted.

People assume brokers control pricing. We don't.

Sometimes we spend days going back and forth with underwriters — restructuring coverage, adjusting deductibles, reviewing driver history, explaining operations, pushing for exceptions — just to move the number slightly.

Especially on the tough ones:
→ Older equipment
→ New ventures
→ Bad loss history
→ Inexperienced drivers
→ Tough states or commodities

Sometimes there's no magic solution. And honestly, those are the calls that bother me most — because I know how expensive trucking already is before insurance even enters the picture.

So I always tell people the same thing:

Start early. Keep your operation clean. Document everything. Don't wait until a cancellation notice to start exploring options.

It makes life easier for everyone — including the underwriter reviewing your file.

Insurance companies do not just price trucks.

They also price uncertainty.

The more organized and professionally handled an operation is behind the scenes, the more comfortable underwriting usually feels reviewing the risk.
