WHAT'S THAT STYLE?
It’s important to recognize the architectural design style of the properties you’re interested in, especially if you are a real estate investor. It helps you to communicate effectively to many professionals throughout the process of any real estate transaction. It boosts your confidence, elevates the experience, and builds trust with your target audience. This is a series of posts “What’s That Style?”
McMANSIONS
OK, let's get it straight. McMansions are not an architectural design style, rather it's a trend, started in the early 1980s when excess was mistaken for the necessity. McMansions are private houses that are not tailored to the family needs, but the grandiosity of individuals whose wealth suddenly turn them into Renaissance men, in their own mind. Whether it's a builder or a buyer, they have a checklist of must-have: cathedral ceilings, great rooms, hot tubs, massive windows, 4-car garage, etc. In truth, McMansions are wannabe Mansions, catering to upper-middle-class who has enough money for a downpayment to show off their economic status, but not enough to have architectural aesthetic or quality in considerations. The goal is to maximize the space with limited resources, an over-sized proportion to the lot, excessive use of gabled roofs or an odd combination of roof styles, a poor mix of architectural design and ornamentation from different periods, abundant use of vinyl and artificial stones, etc. The results became eyesores for many people living in the suburb.
The term McMansion is coined from McDonald's--big, fast, tasteless. McMansion is the big Mac of architecture--massed produced, bland, and unnecessarily large.
