September is the busiest stretch of hurricane season here in South Florida.

Right now people all over Palm Beach County are checking shutters, stocking water, charging power banks. We prepare carefully for the storm we can see coming.

We rarely prepare for the one we can't.

So here's an honest question, and I really do want your answer: if something happened to you tomorrow, would your family still be okay financially six months from now?

Not a fun question. But the families who sit down and answer it out loud are the ones who end up protected.

Term or whole life? Here is the whole thing in plain language.

If you have ever looked into life insurance, those two words probably stopped you cold. So here is the version I would give you at your kitchen table.

Term insurance is like renting. Whole life is like owning. Neither one is wrong — they just do different jobs.

TERM
You pick a length of time. Ten, twenty, thirty years. You pay a fixed monthly premium for that whole stretch. If you pass away during that window, your family receives the full amount, tax free.

Term is built for the years when your family is most exposed. The mortgage years. The raising children years. The years when your paycheck is holding everything up.

And it is affordable. A healthy 35-year-old can often cover half a million dollars for less than what most families here spend on takeout in a month.

The tradeoff: when the term ends, the coverage ends. You outlive the policy and it simply stops. Nothing comes back to you. For many families that is fine, because by then the mortgage is paid and the children are grown.

WHOLE LIFE
Whole life covers you for your entire life, as long as the premiums are paid. There is no expiration date to outlive.

It also builds cash value. A portion of every premium sets aside money inside the policy that grows slowly over the years, and you can borrow against it later if you ever need to.

The tradeoff: cost. For the same amount of coverage it usually runs several times the price of term. That is the honest math, and any agent who does not tell you that is not being straight with you.

SO WHICH ONE?
For most young families in Palm Beach County, a solid term policy protects the years that matter most at a price the budget can actually carry. For final expenses, or for leaving something behind on purpose, whole life earns its place. Plenty of families end up with some of both.

There is no single right answer. There is only the answer that fits your family, your budget, and the years in front of you.

People ask me why I got into insurance.

The honest answer is that I have seen both versions of the same story.

I have seen a family lose someone and still be able to breathe — because years earlier somebody sat down, did something unglamorous, and made sure the mortgage would still get paid.

And I have seen the other version. Where the grief and the fundraiser show up in the same week.

Here is what I want you to hear: that second version is almost never the family's fault. Usually nobody ever explained the options to them in plain language. They got sold to, or they got ignored.

That is the gap I try to fill. Being an independent agent means I am not employed by one company pushing one product. I can look at what is actually out there and tell you honestly what fits your family and your budget — even when the honest answer is "you don't need as much as you think."

If you have been avoiding this conversation because you assumed it would turn into a sales pitch, it doesn't have to be one. Sometimes people message me, I answer three questions, and they go on with their day. That counts as a good day for me.

"How much life insurance does my family actually need?"

A young mom asked me that last week. She thought it was a guessing game. It isn't — there's a real way to figure it out.

Start with about 10x your annual income. Then add what would be left behind: the mortgage, the car note, any credit card balances. Then add what the kids will need — four years of college here in Florida runs $60,000 to $80,000 for one child.

Add it up and you have a real number instead of a guess. Most families are surprised how affordable that number is when they start young.

It is August in South Florida. You already know what that means.

The water goes in the cart. The batteries go in the drawer. Somebody drives over to check on the neighbor down the street who lives alone. We are good at preparing for the storms we can see coming on the radar.

The harder question never makes it onto a supply list. If something happened to you tomorrow, would the people in your house be okay financially? Not next year. Next month. The rent. The car note. The groceries.

For a lot of families the honest answer is "I do not know." I would rather you find that out sitting at your kitchen table than the hard way.

So let me ask you straight, and answer honestly in the comments: how long could your household hold on without your income? A month? Three months? A year?

No wrong answer. Knowing the number is the whole point.

Term or whole life? If that question has ever made your eyes glaze over, this one is for you. No jargon.

TERM is coverage you rent. You pick a window of time, usually ten, twenty, or thirty years, and you pay a set price for that window. If something happens to you inside it, your family gets the money. If you outlive it, the coverage simply ends. That is the tradeoff, and it is why term is inexpensive: most people do outlive it.

WHOLE LIFE is coverage you own. It does not expire as long as you keep paying. It also builds cash value, which is money inside the policy you can borrow against later. It costs considerably more per month for the same amount of protection, because it is designed to pay out eventually, not maybe.

Neither one is the "right" answer. They do different jobs.

Term fits the season where the risk is highest and the budget is tightest: a mortgage, young children, twenty years of paychecks your family is counting on. Whole life fits a different job: covering final expenses so your children are not left paying for them, and leaving something behind on purpose. Plenty of families here in Palm Beach County end up with both, a large term policy over the mortgage-and-children years with a smaller permanent policy underneath it.

Two things before you sign anything. First, price the term coverage you actually need before you buy the permanent policy you were sold. Second, be honest about what you can pay every single month for years, because a policy that lapses protects nobody.

People ask me why I do this work.

The honest answer is that nobody prepares a family for the second wave.

The first wave is the loss itself. Everyone understands that one. The second wave shows up a few weeks later, and it is made of paperwork. The rent is still due. The car note is still due. The final expenses have to be paid by somebody. And a question nobody wanted to ask out loud gets asked anyway: can the kids stay in the same school?

Here is what I have come to believe. The families who come through that season still standing are almost never the wealthiest ones. They are the ones where somebody, years earlier, sat down at a kitchen table and made a quiet decision that nobody thanked them for at the time.

That is the whole job. I am not here to sell you the largest policy I can. I am here to help you make that quiet decision, at a price you can actually keep paying for years.

Here is how to stop guessing. Add up what your household would still have to pay if your paycheck stopped tomorrow. The mortgage or the rent. The car. Everyday bills for the next ten years. College, if you have children. Then subtract what you already have set aside.

Whatever is left is your real number.

For most young families here in Palm Beach County, that number is a lot bigger than the small policy that came with the job. And that policy usually ends the day the job does.

If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family be okay financially? Could they stay in the home? Keep up with the bills? Give the kids the future you have been working toward?

For a lot of hardworking families here in South Florida, the honest answer is "I am not sure." And that uncertainty is exactly what a good plan is for.

"Should I get term or whole life?" It is the question I hear more than any other — so here is the plain-language answer.

TERM life covers you for a set period, like 20 or 30 years. It is the most affordable way to protect your family during the years they lean on you most — while you are raising kids or paying off the house.

WHOLE life covers you for your entire life and builds cash value you can borrow against. It costs more each month, but it never expires and can become part of the legacy you leave your children.

Which is right for you? If you want the most protection for the lowest cost, term usually wins. If you want lifelong coverage with savings built in, whole life may fit. Plenty of families use a mix of both.

There is no one-size-fits-all — the right policy depends on your family, your budget, and your goals. That is exactly what an independent agent helps you sort out.
