Friendly reminder: If someone applies for credit in your name through identity theft, even if their application is denied, you want to take the following steps immediately:

1. Place a fraud alert or freeze your credit, to prevent further credit applications.

2. File a police report.

3. File an FTC report at identitytheft dot gov.

4. Write a letter to each credit agency where credit applications (inquiries) occured, via certified mail. Notify them that these are not your inquiries, and attach the FTC and police reports.

5. The letter should include your photo ID, proof of address, date of birth, and last four of your SSN.

If this does not remove the inquiries, you may need to take legal action against the credit agencies. Good news: This costs you nothing out of pocket, because by law, when the case is settled / you win in court, they have to pay your attorney's fees and court costs.
