Inside College Behind Bars: A Student’s Story from James Davis III ♥️

We had the incredible privilege of hearing James Davis III share his powerful journey through incarceration and his decision to pursue education as a path toward growth and transformation. His story offered an honest look into the realities of life behind bars, while also highlighting the strength it takes to choose self-improvement in the face of adversity. Through his words, we were reminded that education is more than just access to knowledge; it is also a tool for reclaiming purpose, rebuilding identity, and creating new possibilities.

Conversations like these challenge us to think more critically about justice, access, and the power of second chances. We are so grateful to James Davis III for sharing his experiences with vulnerability and intention, and for leaving our community with a message that will stay with us far beyond this moment.

Thank you to Soror Jinell Reid-Green for organizing this impactful event and connecting us with James Davis III to make this meaningful conversation possible. Thank you to everyone who showed up ready to listen, reflect, and engage.

📍 Inside College Behind Bars

Join us for an evening with James Davis III, sharing reflections from his experience as a Wesleyan student in prison. Through his writing, we’ll explore what it means to learn, build community, and hold onto a sense of self in a place not designed for any of those things.

This is a space to listen, think together, and be in conversation about education, identity, and access.

On March 5, the Prestigious Pi Alpha Chapter collaborated with the Afro-American Cultural Center and the Yale Black Women’s Coalition to host Her Roots, Our Recipes: Celebrating Black Womens Cuisine in Connecticut, a celebration of Black women’s cuisine, culture, and community. This event created a space to honor the rich culinary traditions and legacies carried by Black women while bringing us together in fellowship and joy.
We were proud to highlight the incredible cuisine of Sandra’s Next Generation, Kosy’s African Kitchen, Grill-Mon Island, and Auntie Sheelah’s Cheesecakes. We extend our deepest gratitude to these talented Black women chefs and business owners who allowed us to gather in community, care, and connection through food.
Thank you to everyone who joined us in making this event so special!

As we celebrate Black History Month and the legacy of Black freedom movements, we’re standing in solidarity with our neighbors facing detention and deportation here in New Haven.

Tickets to this event are pay-what-you-wish (including free!), and 100% of donations will go directly to migrant justice organizations doing critical work in our community. Donations will be collected at the door.

Come dance in the spirit of the Black tradition and support the fight for justice across all our communities!

✨ Addressing the Elephant in the Room: Setting Boundaries for Self Empowerment ✨

The other night was truly special. We held a beautiful, thoughtful, and intimate conversation that centered Black women, care, and the power of setting boundaries that honor ourselves and our relationships. The space was full of honesty, reflection, and community in the most meaningful way.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible speakers, Morgan Rollins, LPC, and Dr. Allyson Regis, for holding space with such compassion, wisdom, and intention. Your words resonated deeply and made this experience impactful for everyone in the room.

A special shoutout to NAMI Elm City for their continued partnership and support in advancing accessible, community-centered mental health. We are especially proud of Jinell Reid, NAMI Elm City Junior Board Member, and Laila Davson, Event Chair, for helping bring this important conversation to life.

Thank you to everyone who showed up with openness and care. This is what community looks like. ❤️
