CPI rose to 9% in April UK monetary policy tightening expectations strengthened
The Office for National Statistics said CPI rose 2.5% in April from a year earlier. core CPI, which excludes volatile energy and food prices, rose 6.2% in April from a year earlier, up from a 5.7% rise in March.
Economists expect inflation in the U.K. to remain high for the rest of the year due to high commodity and food prices, but is expected to fall sharply in 2023.
Bank of England Governor John Bailey told the House of Commons Treasury Committee this week that he could not prevent U.K. inflation from hitting 10% this year. At the same time, he admitted that rising food prices are like "the end of the world" for British consumers. He attributed the high inflation to poor global supply chains and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
