New Castle, Virginia

Mountain Lodge No. 140 was organized on March 15, 1878. The first meeting place is unknown. It is presumed to have been in a private home or a store building. The first elected officers were as follows:

P. Grove Worshipful Master

C. Hill Senior Warden

Alex Trenor

Junior Warden

W. Mann Treasurer

S. McGuire Secretary

N. Ripley Senior Deacon

J. Lee Junior Deacon

William Stonehauser Chaplain

E. Myers Tiler

The members were Jeremiah Ross, George Lugan and James Mann. They met under dispensation until December 10, 1878, at which time they received their charter. The Lodge became inactive in 1886, was declared suspended in 1887, and revived on May 23, 1888. The first Lodge was built in the Sinking Creek Section where the Hall Road from Route 621 from Upper Craigs Creek joins Route 42 on Sinking Creek. The meetings were held on the third Friday in the beginning, but were later changed to the first Saturday after the full moon in each month, except when the moon was full on Saturday, in which case they met on that Saturday. The Lodge increased in membership on sinking Creek until December 1937, at which time they voted to consolidate with the Door of Virtue Lodge No. 163 at New Castle, but retain their name. The move to New Castle came about because an equal amount of money, $1,643.00 each, was left to the two Lodges for the purpose of erecting a suitable Lodge to further Masonry in the county. This request was in the will of Brother Miles Givens. Committees from the two Lodges agreed that the best plan would be to consolidate and build one Lodge in New Castle. Mountain Lodge No. 140 continued to improve the facilities and in 1978, the social hall on the ground floor was completed to include complete kitchen facilities. This was accomplished with great financial support from Mountain Chapter No. 168, Order of the Eastern Star. In October 1978, the Lodge celebrated its one hundredth anniversary, with Most Worshipful Robert Randle Kennedy, Jr., Grand Master of Masons in Virginia as guest speaker. Because the Lodge had some problems, and needed to be revived on May 23, 1888, Most Worshipful G. Hunter Jones, Jr., Grand Master of Masons in Virginia presented a second anniversary plaque in 1988

End of my second term in eight years as Master of Mountain Lodge No. 140. We got a lot done for the Lodge that year and in the years since. The Lodge (building) is in great shape. Now if the Brothers will just come back to Lodge now and then all would be well.

But I'm here to tell you, the handful of Brothers that are working hard to jeep this Lodge open are growing weary. With the number of members we have there us no excuse for the poor attendance and activity. I question how a good Mason can sit by and watch a handful of Brothers do all the work we all are supposed to be doing. Personally, I question why anyone would want to be a Mason if they can't come to Lodge now and then. I mean, even once a year would be an improvement.

We all have demanding lives. But we find time to do what we prioritize. Every Brother who came before us also had a demanding life. Mostly like far more demanding than ours. But they found a way to establish a Lodge, grow it, and keep it going for over 140 years. The Lodge has survived challenges far greater than what we deal with currently, but it cannot survive apathy.

It's time to care again, Brothers. And if you don't or won't care, please be a man and say so the rest of us will quit wasting our time.

(Note: Obituary for Brother Dr. Ernie L. Johnson)

Dr. Ernie L. Johnson, 74, of New Castle, Virginia passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, surrounded by those who loved him most. The 14th chapter of John was read, a hymn was sung, and prayers were spoken.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Daryl Johnson, and by his brother, Jay Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth, sons, Wade (Sheila), and John “Bucky” (Melinda) and his favorite daughter, Amanda (Duane), grandchildren, Jasmin, Rachel, Virginia, Morgan, Will, and Isaiah, and two great-granddaughters, Zaylin and Abigail.

Called by God into the ministry at age sixteen and tutored by his beloved grandfather, Challie Greer, he spent his life preaching God’s message in eastern Kentucky and Western Virginia. He also served as chaplain at Lewis Gale and Catawba Hospital for over 20 years. Dr. Johnson received his formal education from Kentucky Christian College, Bethany College and the University of Kentucky, receiving his PHD in counseling, which he laughingly referred to as his “Post Hole Diggers Degree).

He had a positive influence in each community he served, as well as in the lives of many. He did not prejudge, nor did he think more highly of himself than he should, always striving to follow the Lord’s example.

He was an avid sports fan cheering on the Kentucky Wildcats and the Cincinnati Reds. He proudly displayed his Kentucky Colonel award bestowed upon him by Martha Layne Collins, former governor of Kentucky, in 1985.

The family would like to thank all who visited, prayed and helped with his care, especially Katrina from Kindred Home Health, whom Ernie came to love. She provided more than physical care and cheered him on during difficult days.

A celebration of Ernie’s life will be held at the New Castle Christian Church Saturday, August 10. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the service conducted by Eric Burger and Eddie Hammond will begin at 11:00 a.m.

Those wishing to do so may make memorial donations to the Craig County Rescue Squad, who answered many calls during Ernie’s illness. Arrangements by Paitsel Funeral Home. www.paitselfh.com
