While America has Black Friday after Thanksgiving, did you know that worldwidr today is actually the biggest shopping day of the year? All thanks to the Chinese holiday Guanggun Jie (known in the west as Singles Day). It is a day when young people celebrate being single (the date 11/11 looks like four single people standing together).

So how big is it? According to the Wall Street Journal, last year's online sales between the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, when a lot of companies start the deals, and Black Friday was $12.3B.

Chinese website Alibaba (think Amazon on steroids) did that in the FIRST HOUR today.

Akin to Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the United States, Singles' Day has been promoted as a shopping fest by Alibaba.
