Remember a few weeks ago when it was Armageddon (again)? The weeping and gnashing of teeth? The end being nigh?

Lo and behold, the market has almost entirely recovered since then. And no dramatic headlines about how we're all going to be okay!

This is why we should never make impulsive financial decisions. We need to take a step back, gain some perspective, and make informed choices about where to put our money. The answer is almost never to pull out from the market during down times.

If anything, those who bought in the past few weeks have had a nice bit of gain. Those who jumped out locked in their losses.

Stay the course. Eliminate the voices of panic and hysteria from your life. Have competent and trustworthy professionals in your corner helping you make the right decisions for your family.

The index has risen 14% in less than a month from the low point of its nasty decline. It’s poised to make a run at a record high.

If you have federal student loans, check to make sure they are in good standing on repayment. The Department of Education has extra collection tools at its disposal that other creditors like banks do not have. Things have been somewhat dormant on collection for a while now, and many folks are in for a rude awakening.

The Education Department will begin collection next month on student loans that are in default, including the garnishing of wages for potentially millions of borrowers, officials said Monday.

Parent PLUS loans are becoming more common. They're even more dangerous than ordinary loans that the student takes out, because a high debt level often goes with the parent into retirement years.

Parents, PLEASE do not do this. The cost is so high and you don't have the time to spare when it comes to sacrificing important years saving for retirement. The "prestige" of a highly ranked school is NOT worth the financial bo***ge that comes with it.

I've heard it put this way: There is no scholarship for retirement.

Find another way. There are creative avenues to pay for higher ed, but not nearly as many for retirement planning.
