Who We Are
-----------------
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont has been a primary part of Vermont’s health care system for more than 30 years, providing thousands of Vermonters with health benefits and services. Indeed, we are an independent, local, not-for-profit Vermont company, governed and managed locally, and our sole focus is Vermont. For more than a generation we have been the only comp

any to offer coverage to all Vermonters, regardless of their age or medical status, or whether they purchase through employer-based health insurance plans, as individuals, or obtain coverage to supplement their federal Medicare benefits. Our affiliation with the national Blue Cross and Blue Shield system provides our members with the security of seamless, discounted health care services when they travel across the country or abroad, but we exist solely to serve Vermonters. We believe our single-state focus allows our about-340 employees to bring highly personalized service to our customers and members. It also enables us to work closely with our state’s communities and health care providers to manage costs and improve the quality of health care, and to adapt our organization to meet Vermont’s changing needs. Our company is centrally located in the state, headquartered on a scenic hillside in the central Vermont community of Berlin.

Pride Month is a good time to say something plainly: LGBTQ+ Vermonters deserve care that respects who they are.

That belief must show up in practical ways because gender identity, sexual orientation, mental health, and physical health are connected. When someone feels safe asking for help, it is easier to get the care they need.

At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont, whole person care means supporting both body and mind so our member benefits include access to mental health counseling. In addition, we offer personalized, voluntary, no-cost support to navigate gender affirming services from our expert team of nurses and social workers.

We’re also proud to support organizations like Outright Vermont, Pride Center of Vermont, and the Barre People's Health & Wellness Clinic, which partners with the The Rainbow Bridge Community Center to help community members access youth and family support, crisis resources, and free affirming care information.

The morning started damp in Essex, with wet grass underfoot and the sky already getting lighter over the fairgrounds as Girls on the Run Vermont (GOTR Vermont) runners, coaches, families, and volunteers began to gather.

By the time runners made their way through the course and toward the finish line, there were people cheering for them all along the way: coaches keeping pace, families calling out from the side, and volunteers helping the morning run smoothly.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont supports Girls on the Run Vermont as statewide sponsor, and we were grateful to spend the morning alongside everyone who showed up for these runners today.

How much screen time is too much? 🤔

Research shows that spending more than three hours a day on social media may increase the risk of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges in teens. And while young people are especially vulnerable, adults can be affected by excessive social media use, too.

Learn how social media can affect mental health and explore practical steps to build healthier digital habits at home in our latest Be Well VT blog. Link in the comments! 👇

More than 1,300 Vermont girls in grades 3 through 8 have spent the last 10 weeks working with coaches, building friendships, and getting ready to run with GOTR Vermont. The end-of-season 5Ks are May 30 in Essex Junction and June 6 in Manchester. We're proud to support Girls on the Run Vermont as its statewide sponsor. Come cheer them on!

Vermont’s shared spaces shape more than how our towns look. They can also shape how connected, active, and supported we feel.

That’s the idea behind placemaking: creating public spaces that help people gather, move, reflect, and feel like they belong.

In Bristol, the Gratitude Tree is one simple example. Community members and visitors are invited to write what they’re grateful for on a paper leaf and add it to a tree in the center of town. It’s a small act, but one that can help build connection and brighten a shared space.

From benches and bike racks to pop-up events, public art, gardens, and gratitude projects, placemaking reminds us that well-being is influenced by the places we live, work, and spend time together.

It's mental health awareness month, and we want to highlight Mental Health Urgent Care in Burlington, a new community resource designed to offer timely support for people experiencing mental health distress.

Mental Health Urgent Care provides same-day access to counseling, peer support, and connections to follow-up care. No referral, appointment, or payment is required. Its goal is simple and important: to help people get support earlier, before distress escalates into crisis.

This is an example of one of many resources that reflect a broader commitment to making mental health care more accessible, more timely, and easier to navigate for Vermonters.

Learn more at 👉 howardcenter.org/mhuc.

The program was developed through a collaboration among UVM Health - UVM Medical Center, the Howard Center, Pathways Vermont, Community Health, and the Vermont Department of Mental Health.

As National Nurses Week comes to a close, we're sending our thanks to nurses across Vermont, including those right here at Blue Cross VT. 💙

Did you know that we have nurses on staff who support members through case management, utilization management, quality programs, or provider collaboration? Their expertise helps members get the right care at the right time.

To all nurses serving Vermonters, thank you for the skill, care, and dedication you bring to our communities.

A round of applause for our Customer Service team! 👏

The Service Quality Measurement (SQM) Group, which compares call centers across North America based on what customers and employees actually report, just named Lindsay Segale its Supervisor of the Year. Michelle Leduc and Heather O’Dell Shipe were recognized as finalists for Agent of the Year. We were also a finalist for Best Performing Call Center out of 500 North American call centers, and the team won SQM’s Highest Employee Experience Award for the Health Care Industry, plus the World Class Employee Experience Award.

Lindsay’s nomination called out one case where she helped a member untangle unpaid claims across three insurance carriers. She kept the member updated every week, ran point with all the parties involved, and went back to each provider office to make sure claims got resubmitted correctly. That’s the kind of work happening on the other end of the line every day.

Congratulations! 🎉
