If you wonder why revenue from fees has sunk to the point the state and county can no longer fund courthouse projects look no farther than Proposition 47. Along with changing many charges from felonies to misdemeanors it also changed the penalties for those charges....thus the reduction in revenue.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office was notified by a concerned member of the community that one of our elderly citizen's was going through some hard times.

When Deputy Worthington met with Ms. Kathleen at her home, he noticed that she had little food and water. She also told the Deputy that she has no means of transportation to be able to get to the locations to pay her bills or to pick up prescription medication. Our Deputies were very concerned for her and immediately began to contact resources to connect her with who would be able to assist her long term. They also helped provide her bottled water and some donated food to get her through for a short time. Deputy Worthington contacted Social Services APS, Center for Aging Senior Resource Center, Interfaith Community Services, Catholic Charities, and the Senior Center. Meals on Wheels was contacted and has been scheduled to perform an assessment to assist her. ATCAA Food Bank contacted the Sheriff's Office and offered to assist her with food.

Deputy Worthington stopped by for a while to check on Kathleen to make sure she was doing ok and that follow up services and assessments were scheduled. He let Kathleen know he cared about her well being and was there to help her.

It is imperative that we check on our neighbors especially our elderly to make sure that they are safe and taken care of during these hot summer months. Sometimes those in need may not feel that they can reach out for help or may be unaware that there are programs available to assist them.

Bail in it's essence is a very simple process. You keep in touch, you go to your court dates, and you make your payments. It really is just that simple people.

I know some people are not in favor of the private bail system. However, consider the alternative where the same system which arrests you and prosecutes you also has the sole control over releasing you to await trial. Any time we surrender all power to a governing body it is destined to be abused.

Lots of people coming through the office have been mentioning new rules concerning growing for "medicinal" purposes. I have no idea what the changes would be but thought I would mention that the California Department of Public Health has a webpage dedicated to the rules and regulations regarding the subject. If you do that sort of thing you should give it a read. That and order a pizza....
