For decades, the Sand Island Lighthouse stood alone against the Gulf of Mexico. Built in 1873, the lighthouse originally stood on an island several miles south of Dauphin Island. Over time, hurricanes and erosion gradually consumed the island itself.

By the late twentieth century, only the lighthouse remained. Surrounded by open water, it became one of the most photographed and recognizable landmarks on Alabama's coast.

Generations of fishermen, shrimpers, and boaters used the lighthouse as a familiar sight on the horizon. It survived storms that destroyed entire communities and continued standing long after the island beneath it disappeared.

Today the lighthouse remains a symbol of resilience on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Its survival tells the story of both the power of nature and the determination of coastal communities that have called these waters home for centuries.
