How To Get the Film Off the Inside Of Your Car's Windshield & Keep It Clean
There are plenty of preventive measures you can take to lessen the formation of film, such as regularly maintaining your car's ventilation system and avoiding smoking. But for film buildup that's already there, some simple cleansers, microfibers, and a careful hand are all you need to get your windshield looking as good as new. While a relatively straightforward process, it's important to know the proper steps as well as what to avoid.
Removing The Film and Keeping It Clean
Before you get to cleaning your windshield, it's important to have the right supplies. These include at least two microfiber cloths, a glass cleaner, and rubbing alcohol. While a glass cleaner made specifically for cars would be ideal, a common household glass cleaner such as Windex should be sufficient. For those who want an ultra clean shine at the end, then you'll also want to bring along some car glass polish for your task.
With all of that out of the way, here's how to get rid of film on the inside of your car windshield:
1. Give your windshield a dry wipe down with your microfiber to remove dust and debris.
2. Apply glass cleaner on to your microfiber (either the same one or a new clean one if you prefer) and give your windshield a thorough rub down.
3. On a second clean microfiber cloth, apply rubbing alcohol and wipe the windshield once again to get rid of any built up grime or tough film.
4. Hit your windshield with another round of glass cleaner or glass polish for extra clarity.
Always use a microfiber instead of paper towels or generic rags, as these items can leave behind their own residue and harsh streaks. Your motions while cleaning can also help prevent streaking. Move your hand in small rotating motions as you're cleaning and end with broad vertical strokes.

Insurance: Don’t Blame Your Insurance Agent

Understanding the real reasons for rising insurance costs

September 15, 2024, By Erin Fosson, Lane Report (Excerpt)

Over the past few years, Americans have faced steadily increasing insurance costs. From auto to home and even your business, the premiums we pay seem to be rising faster than our incomes.

Many consumers, frustrated with these hikes, often turn to their insurance agents for answers, or worse, place blame on them. However, it’s important to understand that insurance agents are not the cause of these rising costs. The reality is far more complex and the reasons behind these increases stem from a variety of factors that extend far beyond the control of your local insurance agent.

To understand why insurance premiums are increasing, look at the factors driving these costs. Insurance companies set their prices based on how risky they think it is to insure you or your assets. If the risk goes up, so does what you pay. Lately, a few things have been driving up these risks, which means higher costs for everyone.

· Increased Natural Disasters: It seems the frequency and severity of natural disasters have risen dramatically in recent years. Here in our state, many Kentuckians find it hard to forget our own recent disasters, the west Kentucky tornadoes of 2021 and the east Kentucky flooding of 2022. One year after the tornadoes, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) estimated that close to $100 million in insurance payments had flowed into these communities, helping homeowners and businesses rebuild. To offset these costs, insurers increase premiums across the board, especially for home and property insurance.

· Litigation and Legal Costs: The United States has a reputation for being quick to sue. This has a direct impact on insurance premiums. Legal costs associated with defending against lawsuits are rising, particularly in auto and home insurance. When people win big settlements in court, insurance companies have to foot the bill and they do that by raising your premiums. The Insurance Information Institute estimates this “social inflation” rose by 14% in the 2010s.

· Economic Inflation: In addition to social inflation, economic inflation is another contributing factor to rising insurance premiums. As the cost of goods and services increases, so does the cost of repairs and replacements. For example, if the cost of building materials rises, it becomes more expensive to repair or rebuild homes after a disaster, leading to higher home insurance premiums. According to the National Association of Homebuilders, residential building costs have increased 38% since March 2021. Similarly, the rising cost of car parts and labor drives up auto insurance premiums.

The misconception: Blaming the insurance agent

Given the frustration that comes with rising costs, it’s understandable that consumers might look for someone to blame and often, the insurance agent becomes the target. However, it’s crucial to recognize that insurance agents are intermediaries between consumers and insurance companies. They do not set the rates; rather, they work within the parameters established by the insurers.

Insurance agents are there to be your trusted advisor, to help you find the best coverage for your needs at the most affordable price. They can offer advice on how to manage your risks, suggest discounts or recommend policy adjustments that might reduce your premiums. However, they do not control the underlying factors that drive premium increases.

What can consumers do?

While the rising cost of insurance is frustrating, there are steps consumers can take to mitigate these increases:

· Increase Your Deductible: By choosing a higher deductible, you can lower your monthly premium.

· Bundle Policies: Many insurers offer discounts if you bundle multiple policies, such as home and auto insurance.

· Take Advantage of Discounts: Ask your agent about any available discounts. Some companies offer them for safe driving, home security systems or even being a loyal customer.

It’s easy to point fingers when costs rise, but it’s important to understand that the factors driving insurance premiums higher are often beyond anyone’s control, including your insurance agent. By recognizing the true causes and taking proactive steps, consumers can navigate these challenging market conditions more effectively. Your insurance agent is there to help, not hinder. Work with them to find solutions that best fit your needs and budget.

5 Things impacting the cost of car insurance right now
By Joe Toppe| June 21, 2024 at 12:00 AM

Car insurance companies weigh a variety of factors when determining how likely potential policyholders will file a claim, with the lowest risks getting better rates, according to Forbes Advisor. Despite similar pricing factors throughout the industry, not all insurance companies weigh them the same, Forbes Advisor said, and, "a car insurance quote you get at one company might be significantly cheaper at a different company for the exact same coverage.

Data compiled by SambaSafety, a risk management software company, shows the cost of auto insurance up 45.8% since December 2021, with factors like claim severity, maintenance on advanced safety sensors, and distracted driving contributing to the inflated insurance costs. According to the report, an estimated 8% of fatal crashes in 2022 involved a distracted driver.

Property value fluctuations can spur the need to review insurance coverage as adequate insurance takes into account the property's current replacement value. Policygenius Managing Editor Pat Howard has this advice for homeowners regarding property value vs. replacement value: "To be on the safe side, you may want to consider getting your own replacement cost estimate from a licensed appraiser who specializes in rebuild cost appraisals. Remember, you're not looking for a market value appraisal — you want one that is only concerned with how much it would cost to rebuild the physical structure of your home and surrounding structures." Homeowners whose replacement value increased alongside their property value should consider purchasing an extended replacement cost add-on for the peace-of-mind of knowing that their investment is fully covered in the event of a major loss

U.S. logs 19 billion-dollar climate disasters so far in 2024

By Elana Ashanti Jefferson| September 10, 2024 at 07:00 AM
Researchers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Centers for Environmental Information recently did the math to determine the cost of weather and climate catastrophes in 2024 so far. As of the first week of August 2024, the U.S. experienced 19 weather or climate events with losses that exceeded $1 billion, according to NOAA. The list includes 15 severe storm events, 1 tropical cyclone, 1 wildfire, and 2 winter storm events: "Overall, these events resulted in the deaths of 149 people and had significant economic effects on the areas impacted."

The goal of the agency's year-over-year "Scorekeeper" is to view climate events through a historical lens, which NOAA has done since 1980. The events noted in the slideshow above are not the only disasters to unfold so far in 2024, but those in with losses that exceeded a billion dollars or more. The agency also notes the uncertainty inherent to tracking disaster-loss estimates, particularly given the scope and scale of major catastrophes, the costs of which include:

Residential, commercial, and municipal buildings;
Any contents within damaged buildings;
Business and living interruption;
Damage to vehicles and boats;
Damage to public assets infrastructure;
Damage to electrical infrastructure and offshore energy platforms;
Lost agricultural assets including crops, livestock, and commercial timber; and
Costs associated with wildfire suppression.
Additional catastrophe costs not included in the government's National Scorecard for billion-dollar disasters may come from:

Natural capital or environmental degradation;
Mental or physical healthcare needs; or
Supply chain interruptions.
Between 2019 and 2023, the U.S. experienced 102 billion-dollar weather and catastrophe events, NOAA reports. That averaged out to just over 20 per year. The price tag on those events was $617 billion, and these events accounted for 1996 deaths.
