To all hunters,
Its seems hard to keep government out of areas they do not understand the impact their involvement has on
Dear Donne --
Thank you for signing our petition calling on Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage to halt the mass tahr cull until she has properly consulted with hunters.
I thought I would give you a quick update on important recent developments.
I’m pleased that the Government has finally listened to hunting groups, including the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association and the Game Animal Council, and backed down from its original position to cull tens of thousands of tahr.
Yesterday, the Minister reportedly made changes to the locations of the cull and a commitment to review the cull after limiting it to an initial 6000. She also conceded a reduction in the numbers of bulls to be killed saying that DOC would now only target bulls in National Parks.
When that review happens, Ms Sage will need to listen to hunters and the industry, which she should have done to begin with.
It’s clear the only reason the Minister has pulled back is that hunters were heading to court to stop her plans. Over $156,000 was raised through Givealittle to pay for lawyers to stop the cull.
On top of this, 33,000 concerned New Zealanders signed my petition calling on her to stop the cull in its current form.
Like you, National believes tahr numbers do need to be sensibly managed, but conservation decisions should be based on science not ideology, and a proper process must be followed. You should be able to have your say.
It is because of pressure from you and thousands of other hunters around New Zealand that the Government has been forced to backtrack.
This is only a temporary win, however. We need to keep the pressure on the Minister and make sure she does appropriately consult with you when she reviews the cull after the original 6000 have been culled.
We need to ensure she does not now also target other species including Sika, Wapiti and trout.
National will keep advocating for your interests in Parliament.
Kind regards
Sarah

Not only that, Ms Sage also instructed DOC to cull bull tahr against specific advice from hunting representatives and expert tourism operators.
