Florida State Guardianship Association - The Space Coast Chapter of FSGA was honored to host Judge Tesha Ballou at our monthly chapter meeting this week. With nearly 80 people in attendance, Judge Ballou informed and enlightened professional guardians, attorneys, paralegals, elder care providers, hospice agencies, examining committee members, placement agencies, Clerk's office staff and court personnel, guardianship and probate community partners. She provided updates on the volume of Orders being processed daily (300 on average) and elements that slow the progress. She identified common challenges, division policies and procedures and interacted with attendees to address practical issues where a collective agreement could be reached.

We always appreciate the opportunity to stay informed and keep open lines of communication that ultimately serve the most vulnerable members of our community.

Year in Review

This time of year is busy behind the scenes, and for good reason. January marks the start of our annual year-end financial review process - a critical part of responsible fiduciary and care management work.

We conduct a detailed review of each client’s banking activity from the prior calendar year, gather 1099s for income, interest, dividends, and real property transactions, and evaluate expenses that may be tax-deductible. When independent contractors have been engaged to support a client’s care, we also determine whether IRS reporting thresholds have been met and ensure required 1099s are issued and postmarked by the January 31st deadline.

At the same time, we begin organizing information for the upcoming tax year. This forward-looking approach allows us to anticipate potential issues, support our CPA partners, and help clients avoid unnecessary surprises.

While much of this work happens quietly, it reflects our commitment to transparency, accuracy, and good stewardship. Our clients trust us to manage complex financial matters with care and accountability - and we take that responsibility seriously.

Thoughtful preparation today helps protect dignity, resources, and peace of mind tomorrow.

Maybe it’s my accounting background, but I have a deep need for information and input. Once I have the information I need, I can make informed, responsible decisions - and that is exactly how we approach decisions for the people we serve.

When faced with complex medical situations, financial wellness, residential changes, or property liquidation & acquisition, we take an interdisciplinary approach. No single decision is made in isolation.

This week, we faced the difficult decision to bring a client home with hospice. Before moving forward, we consulted extensively - with medical providers, nurses, social workers, long-time caregivers, family members, members of our team, a physical therapist, the director of nursing at the assisted living facility, the hospice company, and the durable medical equipment provider.

We asked hard questions:
• Have we covered all the bases?
• Is there anything we’re missing?
• Could this outcome be avoided?
• What services could give our client the best possible chance at recovery, while also preparing for continued decline?
• Is the family in agreement, and do they have the support they need?
• Is this plan in alignment with their stated wishes?
• What services are required to address personal care, socialization, nutrition, physical activity, emotional support, and spiritual needs?
• And yes - can this plan be sustained financially?

Our clients rely on us to be thoughtful, responsible decision-makers. We honor that responsibility by being informed, leading with compassion, acting as good stewards, and carefully considering every alternative.

Some of our best work happens outside the box - and always with the client’s dignity, safety, and quality of life at the center.
